Criteria A. Appropriateness to Mission
1. Statement of Program Goals and Objectives
The Associate in Arts in English for Transfer has been prepared to allow individuals to achieve their
academic and career goals through developing strong writing and revising skills, research skills,
critical reading skills, and the overall ability to generate, organize and communicate ideas. The
Associate in Arts in English for Transfer provides courses to assist students so that they may
succeed at college-level writing by composing effective essays, fulfill the writing requirements for
a two-year degree program, prepare for success in a bachelor’s program at a transfer institution,
and enhance the understanding and critical acumen derived from reading complex and diverse
texts. The Associate in Arts in English for Transfer degree also offers courses designed to enhance
cultural literacy, information competency, critical judgment, creative imagination, and
independent thought. The Associate in Arts in English for Transfer prepares students to seamlessly
pursue a baccalaureate degree in English at a California State University.
2. Catalog Description
A student may earn an Associate in Arts in English for Transfer pending CCCCO approval. The
Associate in Arts in English for Transfer is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor’s
degree in English at a CSU campus. Students completing the Associate in Arts in English for
Transfer degree are guaranteed admission to the CSU system, but not to a particular campus or
major. This preparation includes the following student learning outcomes: 1) critically analyze and
contextualize diverse kinds of complex texts; 2) research and apply source material to generate
written arguments in response to diverse kinds of complex texts. Students transferring to a CSU
campus that does accept the Associate in Arts in English for Transfer will be required to complete
no more than 60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree. To meet the requirements for
the Associate in Arts in English for Transfer the students must:
1. Complete 60 semester units that are eligible for transfer to the California State University,
including both of the following:
a. Complete the California State University General Education‐Breadth pattern (CSU GE
Breadth); OR the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)
pattern.
b. A minimum of 18 semester units in the Associate in Arts in English for Transfer
degree.
2. Obtain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.
To complete the Associate in Arts in English for Transfer degree, students must earn a C or better
in required courses for the major. A P (Pass) grade is not acceptable for courses in the Associate in
Arts in English for Transfer.
Students completing the Associate in Arts in English for Transfer are guaranteed admission to the
CSU system, but not to a particular campus or major. Students transferring to a CSU campus that
does accept the Associate in Arts in English for Transfer will be required to complete no more than
60 units after transfer to earn a bachelor’s degree. The Associate in Arts in English for Transfer
may not be the best option for students intending to transfer to a particular CSU campus or to a
university or college that is not part of the CSU system. In all cases, students should consult with a
counselor for more information on university admission and transfer requirements.

The units indicated in the template are the minimum semester units required for the prescribed course or list. All courses
must be CSU transferable. At a minimum, where there is an indicated C-ID Descriptor in the REQUIRED CORE and LIST A,
the course must have been submitted to C-ID prior to completing the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) proposal for
Chancellor’s Office approval.
Where no C-ID Descriptor is indicated, discipline faculty should compare their existing course to the example course(s)
provided in the TMC at:

and attach the appropriate ASSIST documentation as follows:
• Articulation Agreement by Major (AAM) demonstrating lower division preparation in the major at a CSU;
• CSU Baccalaureate Level Course List by Department (BCT) for the transfer courses; and/or,
• CSU GE Certification Course List by Area (GECC).
The acronyms AAM, BCT, and GECC will appear in C-ID Descriptor column directly next to the course to indicate which
report will need to be attached to the proposal to support the course’s inclusion in the transfer degree. To access ASSIST,
