REDWOODS COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT
Meeting of the
Academic Senate Executive Committee
Eureka: 7351 Tompkins Hill Road, SS 201, Academic Senate Office
Friday, April 10, 2015 at Noon
MINUTES
Members Present: Dan Calderwood, John Johnston, Peter Blakemore and Kady Dunleavy.
Members Absent: Steve Brown
Guest: Mike Haley
1. Call to Order: Copresident Dan Calderwood called the meeting to order at 12:10
pm.
2. Public Comment: Copresident Calderwood welcomed members and asked for
public comment. No comments forwarded.
3. Action Items
3.1 Approve March 27 Meeting Minutes: On a motion by Peter Blakemore,
seconded by Kady Dunleavy, the minutes were approved as written.
4. Discussion
4.1
Professional Development Crosswalk Proposal: Copresident Calderwood
presented and outlined a list of ideas culled from the Student Success Summit,
Faculty Meetings, and Senate discussions. He had cross-matched each of the
suggestions to an Institutional Plan, and then provided a synopsis of the
activity related to the plan. Members approved adding the proposal to the
April 17 Senate Agenda for discussion as well as sending the list to Human
Resources.
*** Our guest had to arrive late for the meeting, so AGENDA ITEM 4.2 was discussed (by
unanimous approval) after the rest of most of the day’s agenda items; the items appear here
in the order listed in the agenda.
4.2 Another look at the Senate Copresident Slate for 2015-16: Copresident
Calderwood explained to the members that Mike Haley (as CRFO Vice
President) and Copresident Johnston had asked to pull the Copresident Slate
from the agenda at the April 10 Senate meeting. Mike Haley joined the
meeting in order to voice his concerns: Due to the fact that John Johnston is
the Negotiator for CRFO and the CRFO contract is being negotiated next
year, they felt that carrying out the duties Senate Copresident and CRFO
Chief Negotiator would be an especially onerous .. For the good of the faculty
and of the district as a whole, John has asked that he be dropped from the slate
so that he can concentrate more fully on the very important details of the next
CRFO contract. This decision was hard, and members all believe that John
has been and will ever be capable of handling any and all responsibilities
asked of him; however, all motives given by him and by Mike Haley were
honorable and it was logical to defer to the decision. The Senate Copresident

Nomination Committee will reconvene to find another nominee for the April
10 slate.
Senate Agenda for April 17: The proposed agenda was reviewed and edited.
Email Regarding Facts of English Dept. Hiring Committee: Copresident
Johnston had created a fact sheet that contained the timeline of email threads
and conversations surrounding the recent emails to “All” that were circulating
as a consequence of David Holper’s post regarding AP 7123 Contract Faculty
Appointment Procedures. Further discussions about collegiality and how to
handle what could be considered bullying and/or harassment should happen in
future, in venues such as Convocation or other college-wide functions.
5. Announcements/Open Forum
5.1
5.2
President Search Update: Copresident Johnston reaffirmed his belief that the
entire search process was professional and thorough and that past-Special
Trustee Tom Henry’s work was diligent and trustworthy.
May Meeting to Approve CC, FQC, and ASPC Actions of May 8: Members
have agreed that Monday, May 11 at 1:30 pm will be the date/time to have the
meeting. Note: the ability to make quorum for a regular May 15 Academic
Senate meeting will be discussed at the May 1 Senate Meeting. This may alter
the necessity for a May 11 meeting of the Senate Executive Committee.
6. Adjournment: By mutual consent, the meeting was adjourned at 1:09 pm.
