In the academic session 2014-15, SSEES expects to have a number of PGTA opportunities for teaching undergraduate courses in our 4 teaching programme areas :
Economics and Business
History
Languages and Culture (including Russian language teaching vacancies)
Politics and Sociology
Postgraduate students who are interested in undertaking PGTA work are invited to apply by completing the form below . Details on the SSEES teaching programmes listed above and on the courses taught therein can be found here: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ssees/prospectivestudents/undergraduate .
Applications will be considered by the Head of Teaching Resources (Dr Christopher Gerry) in consultation with the relevant SSEES Programme Coordinator. The successful candidates will be selected for their suitability as teachers and relevant knowledge.
Teaching can be a valuable experience for a postgraduate student. It can contribute to intellectual development, provide new insights useful for research and offers an important opportunity for career development. For this reason SSEES endeavours to provide opportunities for postgraduate research students to undertake tutorials/classes/seminars
(and occasional lectures) on courses coordinated by experienced academics, who will act as mentors to their PGTAs. Training and support are also part of the experience.
At the same time as being a valuable experience and source of income for the PGTA, too much teaching can get in the way of research and for this reason it is SSEES policy to monitor and restrict the total number and type of hours that a PGTA can teach in order to ensure that research progress is not slowed. Please therefore discuss your application with your supervisor.
Please note that to be eligible for the PGTA scheme you must be a registered research student at the time of appointment, be in a position to complete the teaching assignment as a registered student and be eligible to work in the UK (i.e. be in possession of the correct right to work documentation if appropriate). If you have submitted your thesis prior to 1
September 2013 you will not be eligible for PGTA work at SSEES.
Application forms (no separate CVs or attached cover letters) should be submitted electronically to Esther Williams, Senior Administrator ( esther.williams@ucl.ac.uk
). The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 16 May 2014 .
For applicants who are new to PGTA work at SSEES, informal interviews are planned to take place in late May. If you have informal enquiries regarding these positions please contact Dr Gerry ( c.gerry@ucl.ac.uk
).

4. Some practicalities
The teaching year at UCL SSEES is contained within two 11-week terms . These each consist of 10 weeks contact teaching time and 1 reading week.
Most of our courses are taught as a whole group lecture (given by the course organiser) and weekly sub-group tutorials (quite commonly led by a PGTA).
The PGTA is paid according to the UCL scale (as explained above), with each hour of contact teaching normally being equivalent to 2 paid hours and additional payments made for marking and the provision of office hours.
In addition, there is opportunity for some PGTAs (depending on the course taught) to undertake additionally paid work associated with the marking of extra assessed work and/or related course administration.
PGTAs are provided with a photocopy card, additional printing credits and a PGTA handbook detailing their role in full. a) Are you available to teach during both terms, term 1 or term 2: b) What is ideal number of contact hours you would like to teach per week: c) I am not available to teach on the following days / dates:
