Director of Community Development and Health Promotion Programs University of Saskatchewan Extension Division Position description The Position The Extension Division of the University of Saskatchewan is recruiting for a tenure-track faculty member to fill the position of Director of Community Development and Health Promotion Programs. The Extension Division welcomes applicants for this appointment at either the Extension Specialist III or the Assistant Professor rank. Tenure as an Extension Specialist III generally requires the possession of an earned Master’s degree, while tenure as an Assistant Professor generally requires the possession of an earned doctorate. The successful candidate for this position will collaborate with other Program Directors at the Extension Division to organize joint initiatives and enrich the community development impact of continuing education programming throughout the Division. He or she will become the Director of the Prairie Region Health Promotion Research Centre. His or her extension programming responsibilities will focus on providing leadership and scholarship to build outstanding continuing education and applied research initiatives through the Centre. The Centre will be physically located in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology, and the Director will be expected to build strong relationships with faculty members in the Extension Division, the College of Medicine, and other relevant colleges. The Responsibilities As Director of the Centre, the successful candidate will: • Provide leadership in the design and delivery of continuing education initiatives, and in the conduct of applied research related to community development and population health promotion. • Develop a compelling vision of the role of the Centre in an evolving academic and professional practice environment. • Build and maintain effective partnerships with practitioners, scholars, leaders, funding agencies and community-based organizations engaged in work related to community development and health promotion. • Secure and manage human and financial resources (including successfully competing for external grants and contracts). • Conduct, as well as direct, coordinate, supervise and disseminate the results of credible and relevant applied research. • Communicate effectively with diverse partners and audiences. In addition to directing the Centre, the successful candidate will: • • • • Collaborate with other Program Directors at the Extension Division to organize joint initiatives and enrich the community development impact of continuing education programming throughout the Division. Undertake modest levels of graduate teaching and supervision in the Master of Continuing Education program, and potentially other programs of interest to the candidate. Serve on academic and administrative committees of the Extension Division and the University of Saskatchewan. Serve with professional associations and voluntary organizations in the fields of community development and health promotion. The Selection Criteria Educational attainment • • For extension specialist candidates, an earned master's degree in adult and continuing education, health promotion, community development, or another discipline closely related to the responsibilities of the position. For professorial candidates, an earned doctoral degree in adult and continuing education, health promotion, community development, or another discipline closely related to the responsibilities of the position. Candidates nearing completion of their doctoral degree will be considered. Professional and scholarly experience • • • We are seeking candidates who have experience as practitioners of adult and continuing education, community development or health promotion. Ideal candidates will have experience in adult and continuing education as applied to community development and / or health promotion. Such experience would ordinarily come at the community level, but could be obtained through work with public, private or non-profit sector organizations, including educational or health care institutions. This position will be a tenure-track, faculty appointment. Candidates must either document their accomplishments as, or demonstrate their potential to become, effective scholars in continuing education, community development or health promotion. In the context of the Extension Division, scholarship is focussed on planning continuing education programs, conducting applied research, and undertaking modest levels of graduate teaching and supervision. The responsibility of directing the Prairie Region Health Promotion Research Centre will require someone with experience in leadership, management, and building relationships with a broad range of stakeholders in diverse communities and organizations. Knowledge, skills and personal attributes 2 • • • Solid understanding of at least two of the following three areas: adult and continuing education, community development and health promotion. Knowledge of educational program planning processes (needs assessment, design, implementation, and evaluation). An understanding of the context of community development and health promotion in Saskatchewan would be desirable. • • • • • Ability to lead and manage work teams. Good written and oral communication skills in a diversity of contexts. Ability to develop successful proposals. Solid research skills, and ability to work with a variety of research methods. The Context The Director of Community Development and Health Promotion programs will be a tenure-track appointment in the Extension Division.
