Horizons and Civilisation from February 27 to March 1. Her Highness Sayyida Dr Muna bint Fahd al Said, SQU Assistant Vice-Chancellor for External Cooperation and chairperson of the symposium organising committee, said that this symposium will affirm and address the deep bilateral relations in the economic, educational, scientific, cultural and social fields. HH Sayyida Dr Muna noted that the themes of the symposium and the 22 working papers will discuss geography, history, culture, society, education and economy throughout history. The symposium will come up with recommendations that will contribute in pushing the wheel of co-operation, strengthening the existing OmanIndia ties and enhancing bilateral interaction. Seminars on power transmission The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department of the College of Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), and the Oman Society of EngineersIEEE Oman Section, IEEE Power and Energy Society-Oman Chapter, jointly organised a seminar on ‘Facts solutions for the heavy industries and their influence on transmission and distribution grid’ at SQU. The seminar was sponsored by ABB, the leading power and automation company. Over 90 engineers attended the seminar from different industrial sectors including oil and gas, electricity transmission and distribution companies, Public Authority for Electricity and Water, consultants and members of the Oman Society of Engineers. In addition, over 40 participants representing academics from Sultan Qaboos University, Caledonian College of engineering, ECE post-graduate students and undergraduate students attended the event. Satellite data utilisation Meanwhile, the Remote Sensing and GIS Centre at the SQU organised a seminar titled ‘Satellite data for climate monitoring, disaster and environmental management’. Hans Peter Roesli, Consultant in Satellite Data Applications, European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), Darmstadt, Germany, gave a talk on ‘EUMETSAT and Climate Monitoring Activities with special focus on the Middle East’. He explained that EUMETSAT, in accordance with its convention, makes a substantial contribution to the operational climate monitoring and the detection of global climate change. Workshop on metabolic awareness The metabolic dieticians wing of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at SQU Hospital recently organised a workshop on ‘metabolic awareness and nutrition’ under the auspices of HH Sayyida Dr Mona. The event was aimed at teaching the mothers new recipes for low protein food, creating opportunities for information exchange among experienced mothers on feeding newly IEM (Inborn Error of Metabolism) diagnosed babies. The workshop recommended allocation of more resources for research and updates in the field of metabolic awareness, increase the number of metabolic dieticians in Oman, and to improve the laboratory services for the Inborn Errors of Metabolism patients.
