Nursing Research Capacity Building Background • CON –opened as 9th College at SQU in 2008 • The CON’s next challenge is promoting nursing care based on scientifically proved nursing interventions. • This requires nursing research -which is vital to advancing nursing knowledge and translation of science into evidence-based practice. • But there is need to strengthen the foundation of excellence in nursing research by faculty, graduates and clinical practice nurses in partner hospitals Background • faculty are striving to face the challenge of ensuring evidence based practice and high standards of nursing scholarship • will result in better nursing care, research supervisors and mentors for postgraduate students and conduct of research relevant to Oman. Background • In literature it was mentioned that One of the main barriers to nursing research are ▫ Lack of knowledge, ▫ Lack of skills and ▫ Confidence to engage in the research process. • One strategy to address this gap is to implement research capacity building (RCB) interventions among nursing faculty and indigenous Omani nurses based in the local hospitals. Goal and Purpose • The goal is to enhance excellence in nursing research . • The purpose is to build research capacity through twinning, training, mentoring and collaboration Methods to be Used to Achieve the Goal • Twining of CoN faculty with Omani Nurses in Clinical practice . • Training workshops focusing on critical elements of the nursing research process. • Mentoring ( Collaborating) research teams to develop their capacity, skills and confidence in research and scholarship Methods to be Used to Achieve the Goal • Measuring outcomes of each project activity. • Modifying subsequent activity to ensure that they meet the needs of participants. Benefits • Enrichment of existing research Knowledge and skills • Enhanced research confidence • Publication and research activity which can lead to promotion • Establishing of Research networks between faculty and hospitals Benefits • International Collaboration • A mentor (collaborator) will be working with each team (Mentor-CONF-CPN), three will form a unit to produce a proposal for funding, and work on preparing manuscript. • Understanding about the funding sources ( in Oman and international ) Workshop Facilitators • PI & Co PI will outline workshops and contact with international recognized nurse/ health researchers and scholars. Topics of the Workshops • Oman society and health & Nursing and health care in Oman • Identifying and refining a research problem to develop a program of research • Performing literature searches and systematic reviews Topics of the Workshops • Preparing grant proposals and budgeting for research • Review of Quantitative methods • Review of Qualitative methods Research ethics in Oman Topics of the workshops • Critiquing preliminary research ideas • Critiquing completed research proposals (with feedback) • Scientific writing &writing for Publication What is expected from you ? • Submit a C.V. • Identify Omani clinical practice nurse (minimum a BSN degree) to formulate a research team • Dedicate time for research!! • Attend all scheduled workshops What is expected from you ? • Submit a proposal for funding • Prepare manuscripts for publication • Sign a letter of commitment & consent form • Respond to questionnaires evaluating project activities How do we go about • Phase I : Baseline survey (Quantititative and Qualitative) • Series of workshop attendance • Writing proposal with Guidance of a Mentor • Publishing Papers • Phase II : Evaluation • Phase III: Evaluation How long it is going to take •Phase I: 6 months •Phase II: 6 months •Phase III: 1 year •Total of 2 years • Identifying Collaborators or mentors? • Research Interest of participating faculty Duration of workshops Thank you
