MR. STEPHEN SQUIRES
Stephen Squires is the Principal Conductor and Professor of Conducting in the Music Conservatory at Chicago College of Performing Arts, Roosevelt University. At CCPA, Mr. Squires conducts the
Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble. Mr. Squires received his musical training
at the Preparatory School of the Eastman School of Music and the Crane School of Music, in his home
state of New York. He earned his Master's degree in Instrumental Conducting/Trumpet Performance at
California State University, Northridge. Mr. Squires' current professional appointments include Associate
Conductor of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra
(Rockford, IL), Principal Guest Conductor of the Millar Brass (Evanston, IL), and Conductor of the Salt
Creek Ballet Orchestra (Hinsdale, IL). In addition, Mr. Squires is an accomplished recital accompanist and
freelance trumpeter. He joined the faculty of CCPA in 2001.

Brian Hopwood is the Director of Instrumental Studies at Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar,
MO where he conducts the Wind Symphony and Chamber Orchestra, teaches conducting, music education, and trumpet. He received the Bachelor of Music Education degree with honors from Oral Roberts
University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He earned a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder and a graduate diploma in Wind Conducting and Literature from the University of Calgary,
Alberta, Canada. He received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Arizona State University.
He has taught all levels of instrumental music, elementary through college. He holds memberships in the National Band Association, College Band Directors National Association, International Trumpet Guild, and the Missouri Bandmasters Association as well as the Missouri Music Educators Association
and Music Educators National Conference. He is an elected member of the American School Band Directors Association, the National Music Honor Society of Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Beta Mu, the International School Bandmasters’ Fraternity.

Col. Arnald D. Gabriel retired from the United States Air Force in 1985 following a distinguished
36 year military career, at which time he was awarded his third Legion of Merit for his service to the United
States Air Force and to music education throughout the country. In 1990, he was named the first Conductor Emeritus of the USAF Band.
Col. Gabriel served on the faculty of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia from 1985 to
1995, as Conductor of the GMU Symphony Orchestra and as Department Chairman for eight of those
years. In recognition of his ten years service to the university, he was named Professor Emeritus of Music.
Col. Gabriel was inducted into the National Band Association Hall of Fame of Distinguished Band
Conductors, becoming the youngest person ever to have received this honor. Col. Gabriel was named
Music Director Emeritus of the McLean (VA) Orchestra for his outstanding leadership from 1986 to 2002.
Col. Gabriel continues to appear as clinician at major state, regional, and university music festivals and
guest conducts outstanding school, college, municipal, and military bands as well as orchestras around
the world.
