A. Packet contains approved February minutes.
B. Approved modifications, additions, and deletions via email vote as
noted below (“we” is the English program).
1)
We are combining Bible as Lit I and Bible as Lit II because of
enrollment numbers. We have asked to modify Bible as Lit I to
encompass both semesters and drop Bible as Lit II.

Because we are integrating Literary Theory into the required core
for the English major—not English Ed—we are asking to drop it from a
4000-level to a 3000-level course so that students will be encouraged
to take it early in their program. We are also adding a prerequisite of
English 3003 Intro to Literary Studies, our introductory course.
We feel that it is important for our students to be exposed to
protracted study of a major author, but at present our only such
course is Chaucer and we have no room to add additional upperdivision electives. We are requesting to modify Chaucer to a rotating
topics course called Major Authors.
Our assessment data indicates that our students need a better
understanding of genre studies, but our current genre offerings are
spotty and focused primarily on the novel and on modern poetry. We
have no room for additional upper-division electives. We are
requesting to modify The English Novel to a rotating topics course
called Studies in Genre and to drop the rest of our existing genre
courses which will be folded into Studies in Genre.
Our assessment results indicated that our students need a deeper
understanding of American and World Literature, but our current
historical period electives are all focused on British literature, with
the exception of the American Renaissance. We have no room to add
additional upper division electives. We are requesting to modify
American Renaissance to a rotating topics course called Studies in
American Literary History, which will allow us to offer more courses in
American Lit. We are requesting to add a rotating topics course called
Studies in World Literature. And we are requesting to modify our
existing Victorian Lit course to a rotating topics course called Studies
in British Literary History, while dropping the remainder of our British
period courses which will be folded into Studies in British Literary
History.
We are combining Old English and Middle English because of
enrollment numbers. We have asked to modify Old English to
encompass both semesters and drop Middle English.
We are requesting to change our capstone course from a 2-hour
course that is merely a vehicle for giving assessment tests to a 3-hour
course that is a true synthesizing capstone experience while
continuing to integrate program assessment measurements. The new
course description reflects those changes.
We are requesting to change Nonfiction Prose from an ENGL course
which has always had a Professional Writing HEGIS code to a PRWR
course.
We are requesting to modify our Writing Workshop Course to a
rotating topics workshop that will encompass both Writing for
Children and Young Adults and Inspirational Writing, both of which
we are asking to drop (same logic as above).
10) We are requesting to tweak descriptions of other creative writing
courses to reflect current course practices and create consistency
across courses.
In general, we are attempting to streamline and create balance in our
program in a manner that better aligns our courses with our program
objectives and better prepares our students for the workplace and for
professional and graduate school. No courses are truly being lost because
they are being written into the description of rotating topics courses;
these changes would give us more flexibility and balance in our offerings.
None of these courses are requirements in the English Ed program.
New Business
Course modification request for HIST 4773 – A change was presented to
delete the language indicating the course would be offered only during
the fall semester. Marge Kingsley made a motion to accept the change.
Mike Dunn seconded the motion, which passed.
