2. COURSE DESCRIPTION
ENGLISH COURSE DESCRIPTION
ARABIC COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course highlights the concepts of
Indexing, Abstracting, and Thesauruses
and their importance in the areas of Subject
Analysis and Information Retrieval
Systems. It highlights the types of Indexes,
especially (Book, text, and bibliographic
Indexes).
It also addresses Abstracts by focusing on:
their types, their elements, good quality
abstracts, the access points to abstracts and
computer applications in the preparation of
abstracts.
The course also addresses the subject of
Computational Linguistics and its
applications in the production of
Thesauruses.
The course supports teaching on practical
applications in the characterization and
evaluation of the different types of indexes
and abstracts
3. COURSE AIM
Provide students with important information about modern indexing and abstracting
from various aspects, and development of the students’ practical skills.
4. COURSE OBJECTIVES
* Definition of the concepts of indexing, abstracting, and their place in the
information cycle.
* Their relationship to the process of setting bibliographic subject analysis.
* Study the impact of the nature of the document on the indexing process (books,
periodicals, encyclopedias, newspapers, scientific reports, maps, Bibliography).
* The impact on indexing of the nature of the subject (scientific, musical
terminology, literary texts, symbols).
* Curricula and methods of arranging the entries, referrals, indexing tools, with
emphasis on the importance and thesauruses and types.
* Training on methods of indexing and abstracting, with practical applications in
the preparation of indexes and abstracts

Will produce graduates with a new set of competencies based on the preparation
of indexes and abstracts of all kinds

9. COURSE RULES
Attendance
Attendance at class is mandatory. Course Instructors should keep attendance records. An
"absentee warning notice" will be issued if a student is absent for:
• More than 10% in courses with less than 75 total contact hours.
• More than 5% in courses with 75 or more total contact hours.
An "absentee withdrawal notice" will be issued and the student will be deemed to have
withdrawn from the course with an 'FW' grade if a student is absent for:
• More than 20% in courses with less than 75 total contact hours.
• More than 15% in courses with 75 to 150 total contact hours.
• More than 10% of total contact hours for courses with more than 150 total
contact hours.
