Petitions Report for the Period 09/06/2013 – 09/17/2013 During the dates covered by this report, the following actions were taken on petitions submitted to the Academic Standards Committee: 2 4 2 1 Approved Late Adds Approved Registrations with a Schedule Conflict Denied Registrations with a Schedule Conflict. Approval to transfer Community College credit for an upper-class student. 9 Total Petitions Registrar Approved: Preview Team Approved: Sub-Committee Approved: 2 2 3 Total Approved: 7 Sub-Committee Denied: 2 Total Petitions: 9 Of particular interest was the petition submitted by the student with junior class standing asking for permission to transfer community college credit. The petition posed an interesting question regarding the faculty’s policy which restricts transfer credit from a community college to either students transferring to Puget Sound or to Puget Sound students with freshman or sophomore class standing. As the circumstance presented by the student was not necessarily specific to the student in question, the Committee may wish to review the policy to determine if it still reflects the will of the faculty. Does sub-committee’s practice on awarding/denying transfer credit from certain other scenarios reflect the desires of the faculty and should this be discussed further by ASC? o e.g. challenge to Running Start policy is pending. Running Start is a WA state program which generally involves a HS student that takes a CC course for HS credit (and student desires or expects to earn college credit as well) o UPS has been more selective in what we accept as transfer credit compared to other colleges in WA state o BT brought up the issue of a relatively new high school program being piloted at Federal Way School District (University of Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education). FWSD has approached Tomhave asking if we will recognize their Advanced Certificate. We currently have no policy regarding this program. o M. L. will forward our concern to Senate ASC rep. (Leslie Saucedo) to ask for a charge that ASC further explore this issue and policy as well as other transfer credit issues that arise Some discussion and explanations of how we currently award non-graded course transfer credits Charges from the senate were reviewed and prioritized #1 Common hour and alternative schedules charge was postponed from Spring ’13 due to PeopleSoft implementation barriers to achieve data analyses o B.T. reviewed the history of the desire for alternative schedules that would make efficient use of our classrooms and include a common hour #2 earning two Baccalaureate degrees concurrently similar as #1 in terms of why it could not be addressed #3- the W policy during weeks 7-12 and privacy issues in terms of what a faculty requires as “exceptional circumstances” and/or documentation o discussion of under what scenarios these privacy issues may occur, or has occurred; do we even need policy, or is our existing structure and policies meeting the needs for situations that arise? o This seems to be a priority for discussion #4- academic credit for international students B.T.: we should also address the 2nd baccalaureate degree issue in collaboration with the Curriculum Committee as a priority S.K.: B.T. had brought up a charge related to hearing boards for 2nd incidents issue is that 1st dishonesty issue is only issued to Registrar, and should this info be disseminated to, e.g. parents, who might be able to facilitate a better outcome o question is whether the institution should act more proactively, strongly, etc. and if we need a universal policy that promotes faculty to act in similar ways o S.K. notes that we have a more documented approach to academic incidents, but we don’t raise as much awareness as to the seriousness of the plagiarism/academic dishonesty incident o Consensus is that this should be a charge request to Senate and M.L. will proceed with request Minutes submitted by Gary McCall
