Charges and Issues under Consideration (Status Update)
Don Share, chair, asked the committee to review ASC’s charges and offer updates in efforts to organize
the agenda for the semester.
A. Student Bereavement Policy: There was agreement to further explore the bereavement
policy. Next steps: Debbie Chee and Lori Ricigliano volunteered to draft a policy to bring to
committee for discussion.
B. Concurrent Baccalaureate Degrees discussion: The ASC has not formally discussed a policy on
offering concurrent baccalaureate degrees. Our current practice is to address individual
requests through the Petitions Committee. Next steps: Brad Tomhave will research the practice
and consult with peer institutions. Other considerations in the creations of this policy would be
financial impact, if any, and availability of seats in upper division courses.
C. Common Hour and Class Schedule: A survey was administered to Chairs and Directors in the
fall in an effort to identify features of a schedule that work and do not work and seek input
about the interest of a common hour. We learned that faculty who took the survey liked the
idea of a common hour if there was a feasible way to accommodate it in the schedule. Next
steps: Sarah More and Brad Tomhave will put together a draft schedule and seek input academic
department schedulers.
D. Mid-term Grades: In efforts to support student retention and identify practices and policies
that clearly communicate a student’s status in the classroom, Puget Sound’s current practice of
assigning mid-term grades was identified as a practice that would be good to review. The
transition to PeopleSoft may afford us an opportunity to review our mid-term grading practices.
Next steps: The ASC will begin this conversation.
E. Academic Dishonesty: A survey was administered in the spring 2012 and results were
discussed in the December 6, 2012 meeting. Next steps will be decided at a later meeting.
F. Organization of Charges for the Spring 2013 Semester:
 Concurrent Baccalaureate Degrees
 Student Bereavement Policy
 Common House and Class Schedule
 Mid-term Grades
Ken Clark moved to adjourn the meeting. Landon Wade seconded.
