JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Knowledge Transfer Partnership Associate - Data Mining and Analytics for Home Energy Management Services Job References: Department: JW/174; HR: 1271464 Department: Computer Science (For further information regarding the department and an outline of current research projects in the department please visit our website at http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/ Information on UCL can be found at www.ucl.ac.uk ) Research Group: Media Futures Reports to: Dr. Jun Wang Grade: 6 Funding Body: Technology Strategy Board and PassivSystems Ltd Main Purpose: The primary objective is to develop intelligent energy advisory and feedback data systems to improve home energy advice and feedback, using consumer profiles and energy consumption data to automatically recommend and optimise services and influence new product development.. Duties and Responsibilities: To investigate a range of data technologies & methodologies to ensure the system is fit for the data sources identified. To create a data warehouse to enable data storage and extraction. To apply optimisation techniques to the data warehouse to support the user trials for identifying new product and service ideas (with Associate 2) To test and evaluate the systems to ensure a fit with the company needs. To develop a prototype of the energy advisory system, and create a schema. To record and implement all the outputs from the project and, by training, embedding this knowledge in the company. To manage the planning and documentation of the project. To minute and document meetings of the project partners. To take part in the related KTP training. To prepare and present findings of research and development activity to colleagues for review purposes. To represent the project at workshops and conferences. To contribute to the drafting and submitting of papers to appropriate peer reviewed journals and conferences. To contribute to the overall activities of the research team and department as required. To periodically record your skills training and continuing professional development activities on UCL’s web-based system. Responsible for ensuring that equipment is safe and maintained in working order and that work complies with departmental security policy. The Principal Investigator(s) acknowledge the responsibility for guiding and assisting the Associate in their professional development. PERSON SPECIFICATION Knowledge – including Qualifications First class or upper second undergraduate degree in Computer Science or Mathematics based discipline is essential MSc level postgraduate degree a Computer Science or Mathematics based discipline is preferred. Relevant experience equivalent to a degree will be considered in exceptional cases. Skills Good interpersonal skills to elicit requirements Applicants should have a strong foundation in mathematics including vector and matrix algebra, calculus, and probability and statistics. Machine learning or data mining background is preferred Effective written and verbal communication skills Excellent organisational skills Ability to work to deadlines whilst maintaining accuracy and an eye for detail Experience Successful candidates will have proven experience with programming languages such as C/ C++, Java, Python or matlab and databases such as mysql. The successful candidate will be appointed on spine point 21. Progression through the salary scale is incremental, with staff moving to the next point on the scale on 1st August each year, until they reach the top point, which for Grade 6 is point number 27. Please note however that, should 1st August fall within your probation period, you would not receive an automatic increment that year. Cost of living pay awards are negotiated nationally and are usually effective from 1 st August each year. Hours of work Full time hours for research staff average 36.5 hours per week and times of work are as determined by the Head of Department. Location of work The Associate will be supervised by Dr. Jun Wang (UCL Computer Science) and will be located at the company’s offices, located in Newbury. The Associate’s company supervisor and manager will be Dr Edwin Carter, PassivSystems Ltd. Personal Development Part of being a KTP Associate on a Knowledge Transfer Project is that there is significant time (10%) available for training and personal development. A personal development budget up to £4,000 is available and can be accessed with the approval of the postholders supervisors.. Term 24 months, from 1 October 2012. Holidays Annual leave is 27 working days for a full time member of staff. UCL also closes for a period at Christmas and Easter, at which times staff benefit from a total of 6 ‘closure days’ in addition to Bank Holidays.
