The goal of the FSU ACM-Women chapter is to take positive action to encourage women to participate in computer-related studies, research and careers, to promote their marketability in industry, and to support a congenial atmosphere. Our meeting today will consist of talking about some of our ideas for this semester and soliciting ideas. Our main goal is to attract women into computer science. Goals this semester 1. Becoming an RSO o This will allow us to get funding and to participate in Market Wednesday. Some past Market Wednesday events helped introduce women to computer science by having them solve logic puzzles for baked goods. 2. Start a mentoring program o We will start a peer mentoring program by having the more senior students mentor incoming students on non-homework issues. We’ll introduce the program on Friday (Sept 19) in the undergraduate orientation. We are still looking for mentor volunteers. 3. Finding guest lecturers o We are looking for guest lecturers to come to computer science to talk about themselves, their field, their organization, or a computer science topic. Dr. Baker had some people suggestions: Diane Moore (Harris). She is already coming to one of his classes to talk in October. Dr. Baker will give us her contact information. Sara Stoecklin (FSU CS in Panama City) Kay Stevens (Datamax CEO) Someone from Infinity (Dr. Whalley may know). 4. CS Newsletter o We could work with ACM to set out a once-monthly CS newsletter that could announce department information, research info, and ACM/ACM-W events o Could use template of CS Alumni newsletter o It would also make sense to work with the ACM webmaster to get some more events up on the website Upcoming events Undergraduate orientation talk (this Friday) Misc Perhaps we could start up a system for people to donate books to the CS Majors lab We could re-open and use the ACM Reading Room for stuff At one point we talked about starting up a CS Help Desk. This project fell by the wayside, but we can remember it for the future. Getting more high school students involved in CS o Have a separate ACM Programming Contest for them? (talk to Carl Owenby) o Getting high school dual-enrollment for introductory CS classes Dr. Whalley mentioned that only about 3 high schools have real CS classes Dr. Baker suggested that it might be nice to advertise our social events to the introductory CS classes We could try to contribute more things to the CS computer parts display Maybe we could have a social soon (CiCi’s Pizza, Old Mexico)? Action items for Officers Alex will talk with Dr. Whalley to get a peer mentoring meeting before Friday Sarah will work on resurrecting the Facebook group and revamping the current ACM-W webpage
