The summer school will be held at UCL which is located in central London, close to Regent's Park, the British Museum, the British Library and West End shops and theatres. What is included in the fee? • All course materials and a supplementary reading list • Library and Internet access • Lectures and seminars by senior staff – approximately 30 contact hours • Guest speakers • Lunch, morning & afternoon tea each day and social events • Access to the University of London gym and sporting facilities Are the courses accredited? • All attendees will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance. • Faculty of Public Health CPD credits can be claimed. Is accommodation provided? The course is non-residential. You will need to arrange your own accommodation in London if necessary. However we have reserved rooms in College Hall, managed by the University of London, which is a short walk from the UCL Summer School venue. An en-suite single room including breakfast costs £45.50/night. Booking needs to be made with College Hall (http://www.halls.london.ac.uk/visitor/ college/Default.aspx). College Hall is opposite the University of London Union sporting and recreational facilities. We can provide you with a College Hall booking form and/or a list of other accommodation (varying rates) within walking distance of the summer school upon request. Who is the summer school designed for? The summer school is designed for two types of participant: those who already work in the field of public health and who want to refresh their knowledge of population health, and those who are considering a career in public health or related research such as social epidemiology and health policy (national and global). Our course is multi-disciplinary. What topics will be covered over the five day course? Class, Work, Gender, Ethnicity, Socialbiological translation, Life course epidemiology, Mental health, Oral health, Disability, Inequality and human rights, Russian mortality crisis, Tackling Health Inequalities, Public health ethics, Politics of health and equity, Globalization and health. Michael Marmot will open the summer school with a presentation on the social determinants of health and close the week with a lecture and discussion on national and international policy development. The guest lecture, given by Mark Petticrew, will be on complex interventions and public health. Summer school participants are invited to a public seminar entitled Rebuilding Health in Post-Conflict Settings: a social determinants perspective, hosted by the International Institute for Society and Health with Jean-Francois Trani, Seb Taylor, Egbert Sondorp and Peter Ventevogel.
