MISSION: Soldiers from the 6th Iraqi Army
Division with Coalition Force assistance
conducted a search of the Al-Abbas Mosque to
capture three anti-Iraqi force members.
Summary: Three military aged males shot at a
Coalition forces patrol in South Baghdad from a
van and then quickly fled to the Al-Abbas mosque
with Coaliton and Iraqi Army forces in pursuit.
Upon arriving outside the mosque, the three males
dismounted their vehicle and ran inside the
mosque. Coalition forces cordoned off the
mosque area and searched the abandoned van
while the 6th Iraqi Army Division requested
permission to search mosque grounds. Coalition
Forces located a significant amount of weaponry
inside the van to include a machine gun, a sniper
rifle, an anti-tank mine, rocket-propelled grenades,
and a launcher used during the drive-by. The 6th
Iraqi Army search of the mosque grounds yielded
a cache inside a shed in the mosque parking lot.
The Iraqi Army unit also questioned a government
official and a local national citizen about the three
AIF who fled into the mosque and the items
located in the shed in the parking lot. They further
asked these local citizens if they would
accompany them during an interior search of the
mosque. A local national agreed to accompany
the Iraqi Army personnel during a search of the
mosque, which yielded no weapons. However, as
the Iraqi Army personnel continued searching the
immediate area inside the mosque compound
near the garden and in the minaret, significant
caches were found. Nine of Eleven males
discovered inside the mosque compound were
detained. Local leaders confirmed the mosque did
not sustain damage or disrespect as a result of the
search.
