DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY “Diagnostic medical sonography is an imaging modality that can work in conjunction with other imaging modalities such as x-ray, MRI, CAT scans and nuclear medicine studies. Diagnostic medical sonographers use sound waves to generate images used for assessing and diagnosing various medical conditions. Many people associate sonography with pregnancy. It's how a fetus can be seen in the womb. But this technology has many other applications in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions in the abdomen, breast, heart and blood vessels and, more recently, in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal problems.” Taken from http://explorehealthcareers.org/en/Career/29/Diagnostic_Medical_Sonographer At MTSU, students may choose to complete a traditional four-year degree in a science related discipline such as Biology or Chemistry. However most students choose to complete a 3 + 1 program in conjunction with either Vanderbilt University (https://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/root/vumc.php?site=sonographyschool) or Volunteer State Community College (http://www.volstate.edu/dms/). In this program students are expected to complete the three-year program outlined below (90 semester hours academic work at MTSU) coupled with 12 months (30 semester hours or equivalent) at Vanderbilt or Vol State. Upon successful completion of this program students will earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science.
