PRE-NUCLEAR MEDICINE TECHNOLOGY “In nuclear medicine, radionuclides—unstable atoms that emit radiation spontaneously—are used to diagnose and treat disease. The nuclear medicine technologist is a highly specialized health care professional who prepares and administers these radiopharmaceuticals as well as other medications to patients. Using specialized equipment, the nuclear medicine technologist monitors the characteristics and functions of tissues or organs in which the radiopharmaceuticals localize. Abnormal areas show higher or lower concentrations of radioactivity than normal. Nuclear medicine technologists may also operate computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners that are used in conjunction with nuclear medicine procedures.” Taken from http://explorehealthcareers.org/en/Career/31/Nuclear_Medicine_Technologist. At MTSU most students choose to complete a 3 + 1 program in conjunction with Vanderbilt University (https://medschool.vanderbilt.edu/radiology/education/technology/nuclear). In this program students are expected to complete the three-year program outlined below (90 semester hours academic work at MTSU) coupled with 12 months (30 semester hours or equivalent) at Vanderbilt. Upon successful completion of this program students will earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science.
