Pre-Pharmacy Program

Pre-Pharmacy Program
“Pharmacists dispense medications prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and monitor patient health. They advise
physicians and other health practitioners on the selection, dosages, interactions and side effects of medications. Pharmacists must
understand the use, clinical effects and composition of drugs, including their chemical, biological and physical properties. Pharmacists are
the medication experts. They protect the public by ensuring drug purity and strength. The goal of pharmacy care is to maximize positive
health care outcomes and improve patients' quality of life with minimum risk. Most pharmacists work in a community setting, such as a
retail drug store, or in a hospital or clinic.” Taken from http://explorehealthcareers.org/en/Career/14/Pharmacist
Admission to a Pharmacy program requires at least three years of undergraduate study, although some programs require a four-year
Bachelor’s degree. Successful completion of a Pharmacy program leads to a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. At minimum successful
applicants require three years of college level work with a 3.4 GPA or higher. Students are also required to complete the Pharmacy
College Admissions Test (PCAT). A list of pharmacy programs throughout the U.S. is available in the Pre Professional Health Science
Advising Center in KUC 316. Four years of additional study in pharmacy school are required for completion of the Doctor of Pharmacy
degree.
At MTSU, students can choose to complete a four-year degree in a science related discipline such as Biology or Chemistry. We also offer
a 3 and 1 program. The three-year program outlined below coupled with one year of successful work in Pharmacy school satisfies course
requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Health Science from MTSU.

should first take Chemistry 1010/1011 (Introduction to General Chemistry) before taking CHEM 1110/1111.
**The prerequisite to MATH 1910 is MATH 1730 Pre Calculus or a MATH ACT > 26.
*** Some Pharmacy schools require Economics 2410 Principles of Macroeconomics.
