Cameron University celebrates Constitution
Day
In the spirit of tradition, Cameron University joins colleges and universities across the United States to
celebrate Constitution Day on Monday, Sept. 17. Sponsored by the School of Liberal Arts, the Department
of History and Government, and the Lawton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution,
Cameron University will mark Constitution Day with a panel discussion on the United States Constitution in
the Sciences Complex Goodyear Room on the Lawton campus from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.
Drawing on their profound insights, a number of distinguished leaders, including Oklahoma Supreme Court
Justice Marian Opala, Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals Judge David Lewis, Magistrate Shon Erwin,
and State Representative T.W. Shannon, will discuss the meaning and implications of the U.S.
Constitution. Copies of the document and bookmarks will be available during the event. The event, followed
by a reception, is free and open to the public.
Constitution Day celebrates a key point in U.S. history: Sept. 17, 1787, when the 39 delegates to the
Constitutional Convention signed the document that defined and separated powers of the federal
government. The holiday was first proposed by U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, as a way to remember the U.S.
Constitution. Federal legislation establishing the holiday was passed in 2004. All educational institutions
receiving federal funds from the U.S. Department of Education are required by a law to hold an annual
educational program on the Constitution for students.
