Cameron honors Brown with Distinguished
Service Award
Cameron University President Cindy Ross presented General Doug Brown with the Distinguished Service
Award during a special reception held today at the McMahon Center on Cameron’s main campus in
Lawton. Brown is the Commander of the United States Special Operations Command, MacDill Air Force
Base, Fla.
“Cameron University is proud to claim such a distinguished alumnus as General Brown,” said Ross. “He
exemplifies leadership, and it is my great pleasure to present him with the Cameron University
Distinguished Service Award in honor of his many years of service both to our country as well as to
countless individuals.”
The Distinguished Service Award is Cameron University’s most prestigious honor. First presented in 1983,
the award recognizes outstanding civic and professional accomplishments that set examples for our
students and all citizens of Oklahoma.
General Doug Brown is the 48th recipient of this award. He joins a governor, a lieutenant governor,
researchers and noted community leaders as an honoree.
“My time at Cameron was memorable as this University is filled with special students and special
professors,” said Brown. “I am proud to return to Cameron campus where I received a solid foundation that
marked the start of many great things in my life, and I am humbled to receive this honor which has been

given to such a distinguished group of individuals.”
To mark the event, Ross presented Brown with a unique piece of artwork called “Winter Blend II: Wichita
Mountains” by Cameron’s own Kathy Liontas-Warren. The picture proudly displays the natural beauty of
Southwest Oklahoma.
“It is our hope that it will serve as a reminder to General Brown of his time spent at Cameron which helped
prepare him for a lifetime of leadership and service,” said Ross.
After the reception, Brown delivered the commencement address during the Cameron University
commencement ceremony. Approximately 600 students participated in the event held at Cameron
Stadium. To add a special new tradition, this year’s event concluded with a fireworks display for all to
enjoy.
