Cameron University to host high school counselors from 11 surrounding counties

Cameron University will host its “Counselors’ Conference” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, in the

Shepler Center’s Will Rogers Room. Approximately 25 counselors from 11 counties in Southwest

Oklahoma will attend.

CU’s fall “Counselors’ Conference” will provide new information to the group about Cameron’s expanded scholarship program, the criteria and preparation for the various types of admission, research opportunities for undergraduate students, federal financial aid information and details of concurrent enrollment opportunities for high school students.

“High school counselors are our first and best contact with area high school students,” said Dr. Larry Kruse, senior associate vice president for enrollment management at Cameron. “We are members of a partnership with them in assisting young people to make informed decisions about their educational future. We have a role and a responsibility to provide the counselors with the best and most accurate information available, so they, in turn, can answer the number of questions students and parents have about college.”

This year’s conference will also feature a special segment, the “University Showcase.” Dr. Peter Abramo, executive director of the Center for Emerging Technology and Entrepreneurial Studies (CETES) at

Cameron, will present the segment, which will include a tour of the new facility.

CETES is a unique partnership in advanced technology, business development and information security, linking the university’s academic community with private business to develop high-paying jobs. More than

$2.5 million has already been committed by Cameron, state government and private partners to fund the first stage of CETES, which is now under construction.

The counselors will learn first-hand how the CETES initiative will provide education and employment opportunities in this region for graduates of their respective high schools.
