‘Swing’ is the thing for Cameron debate squad
Although the Spring 2004 semester is barely underway, Cameron University’s speech and debate team has
made the most of it with an outstanding showing at the Arkansas Tech University “Swing Weekend” earlier
this month.
Cameron brought home first place individual event sweepstakes awards at both tournaments and was
crowned first place Swing Sweepstakes winners. The team placed in 44 categories, winning first place in
many of the events.
A "swing" tournament is an opportunity for college debaters to participate in two tournaments in a single
weekend.
Zach Fort, a Cameron sophomore from Mannford, won the outstanding overall competitor honor by
winning the Pentathlon in one tournament, while Genee Gorup, a junior from Wichita, Kan., won the
Pentathlon in the other. Fort and Gorup were joined by Sarah Collins of Dennison, Texas, in helping
Cameron place in the top four in the Pentathlon of both tournaments.
Other CU squad members making the trip were Jennifer Adrian of Lawton, Desiree Fouard of Hutchinson,
Kan., Amber Reed from Corpus Christi, Texas, and Lance Witti from Comanche. All seven participated in
multiple categories and brought home awards at both tournaments, according to assistant communication
professor Eddie Skaggs, who directs Cameron’s speech and debate program.
