Cameron University Academic Enrichment - Research - Managing Internal and External Research and Scholarly Activities: A Quick Guide Mission The mission of Academic Research is to provide resources and opportunities for faculty and students in general and especially those students in the honors program pursuing research and scholarly activities in support of enhancing their professional and academic careers. To accomplish this mission, Academic Research supports all pre-award aspects of the proposal development process, and serves as a liaison between external funding agencies and the relevant administrative units within Cameron University. To facilitate and sustain academic research across campus, the goals include the continuing development and provision of information about research opportunities. Proposals will be evaluated on merit with special consideration to proposals that include the following: 1) student collaborative research opportunities, 2) establish a sound basis for the pursuit of external grant opportunities, and 3) lead to publications or other scholarly products. Faculty may request the purchase of equipment only when the equipment is essential to a scholarly work or research project and is not already reasonably available and accessible elsewhere on campus or through other external funding sources. Equipment is usually designated as 1) special purpose equipment and 2) general equipment. Special purpose equipment is any equipment necessary to the project. General purpose equipment includes typewriters, personal computers, etc. Research with Human Subjects Human Subject Approval: individuals conducting research at Cameron University with human subjects must apply for formal human subject approval by going through the University of Oklahoma Institutional Review Board (OU-IRB). In an effort to track faculty, students, and staff who have obtained OU-IRB approval, you are asked to forward a copy of the relevant documents to the Office of Academic Enrichment. Procedures Research fund requests for $500 or less: The applicant will submit a formal application to the Director of Academic Enrichment through the Department Chair and the Dean. The final approving authority for the application is the Chair of the Cameron University Research Committee and the Academic Enrichment Director. 2 Research fund requests for more than $500: Applicants for these funds will submit a formal request in the form of a proposal to the Academic Enrichment Director through the Department Chair and the Dean. The proposal will be reviewed by the Cameron University Research Committee. Based on the recommendation of the Research Committee, the Provost serves as the final approving authority. 3 CAMERON INNOVATIVE INSTRUCTIONAL GRANT Purpose and Scope The Cameron Innovative Instructional Grant has been established to support faculty and staff in the improvement of classroom, laboratory or library instructional procedures. Aimed at the implementation of new and emerging technologies in the classroom, primary consideration will be given to projects concerned with direct classroom, laboratory or library applications. Procedures Innovative Instructional fund requests for $500 or less: The applicant will submit a formal application to the Director of Academic Enrichment through the Department Chair and the Dean. The final approving authority for the application is the Chair of the Cameron University Teaching and Learning Committee and the Academic Enrichment Director. Innovative Instructional fund requests for more than $500: Applicants for these funds will submit a formal request in the form of a proposal to the Academic Enrichment Director through the Department Chair and the Dean. Based on the recommendation of the Teaching and Learning Committee, the Provost serves as the final approving authority. 4 CAMERON FACULTY DEVELOPMENT GRANT Purpose and Scope The Cameron Faculty Development grant has been established to support faculty or groups of faculty in acquiring new pedagogical techniques/information or in learning a discipline not primary to their field. Primary consideration will be given to proposals that assist faculty or groups of faculty (and ultimately students) in acquiring new pedagogical techniques/information or in learning a discipline not primary to their field, emphasize cross-disciplinary activities, significantly impact courses which are in place, and address needs identified by assessment activities. Procedures Serving as a clearinghouse, the Office of Academic Enrichment routes the formal Faculty Development Grant request to the administrative units within the University for review and approval. 5 CAMERON UNIVERSITY’S EXTERNAL PROPOSAL PROCESS 1. Contact the Office Academic Enrichment early for assistance in preparing your proposal budget, obtaining up-to-date information about Cameron University, setting up of access for electronic submittals, and other assistance as requested. We know the university policies about effort, benefits, cost sharing, subcontracts, travel, etc. and will assist you in incorporating these into your proposal. 2. Proposals are routed and approved within the University using the Grant Implementation Form. The Principle Investigator will need to sign this form to begin the routing process. Assuming the submission deadline allows, this needs to be completed no later than 21 business days prior to the deadline of the grant and returned to the Office of Academic Enrichment in Cameron Exchange 100. 3. The Office of Academic Enrichment will complete the routing process. The Grant Implementation Sheet will be reviewed and signed by: the Principle Investigator, Chair of the Department, Dean, Academic Enrichment Director, and the Provost. 4. The Office of Academic Enrichment will coordinate with the Provost and the Principle Investigator regarding the mailing or electronic submission of the final grant proposal to the funding agency. 5. Only the Provost is authorized to sign proposals and agreements on behalf of Cameron University. Do not sign any submittal certifications on behalf of the institution. 6. All awards for external support of research, instruction and training or public service projects must be processed through the Office of Academic Enrichment. Only authorized institutional representatives may accept awarded grants and contracts on behalf of the university. 2. Should you be notified of the success of your proposal, forward the email, letter, and official award document to the Office of Academic Enrichment. Keep a copy for yourself. Should the Office of Academic Enrichment be notified of the success of your proposal, we will forward a copy of the notification to you. 3. It is the responsibility of the Principle Investigator to confirm that a. The scope of work accurately reflects the scientific or scholarly work the Principle Investigator proposed or agreed to do b. The deliverables and timelines are acceptable c. The budget reflects what was proposed or revised during the review process 4. After the account has been established the Principle Investigator works in concert with the Business Office and Office of Academic Enrichment to ensure compliance with relevant state and federal regulations.
