In August of 2001, the university awarded Brooks the title of Professor Emeritus, and in the summer of 2008 the Watkins College Board of Trustees named him President Emeritus. Outside of academia, Jim’s interests include railroading history — particularly the lines which crossed the southern Appalachian barrier, and open-wheel and stock car racing. His interest in motor sports dates back to the 1950s when he, at age 14, and a friend one Sunday morning slipped away from home in Mooresville, NC, and hitched-hiked to Concord where they attended a NASCAR race. The race winner was Lee Petty, father of Richard Petty. Jim has maintained his interest in auto racing since that time and has personally driven stock and open-wheel race cars around the New Nashville Speedway at an average speed of 160 miles per hour. He claims to be MTSU’s fastest-known professor emeritus. Dr. Fred P. Colvin, professor emeritus, joined the History Department in 1969, teaching European history. He served as Faculty Senate president and director of graduate studies in the History Department. He later developed and taught courses in Canadian history, the history of American sport, and Tennessee history.
