Dr. James Philip (Phil) Oliver—at MTSU for over a decade, teaching
philosophy courses on diverse subjects including atheism, childhood,
happiness, the environment, the future, and bioethics. Ph.D., Vanderbilt.
Originally from Missouri, near St. Louis—indoctrinated as a Cardinals
baseball fan in early childhood, so he understands something about
religious zeal. Undergraduate degree from Mizzou, Columbia, MO.
Dr. Warren Tormey—scholar of Medieval and Early Renaissance
Literature by training, maintains interests in these fields as well as in
Milton Studies, the epic tradition, economic history, environmentalism
and literature, and sports literature. In the MTSU English department

Dr. James T. Brooks, Jr., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, MTSU
A life-long educator, Jim Brooks holds bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral
degrees in speech communication. After more than three decades at
MTSU, Jim retired from the University in December of 2000. From 2001
until 2008, he served as president of Watkins College of Art, Design, and
Film. Brooks was the first recipient of the MTSU Honors Program
teacher award and also was a recipient of the university foundation’s
outstanding teacher award. In August of 2001, the university awarded
Brooks the title of Professor Emeritus, and in the summer of 2008 the
Watkins College Board of Trustees named him President Emeritus.
Outside of academia, Jim’s interests include railroading history —
particularly the lines which crossed the southern Appalachian barrier,
and open-wheel and stock car racing. His interest in motor sports dates
back to the 1950s when he, at age 14, and a friend one Sunday morning
slipped away from home in Mooresville, NC, and hitched-hiked to
Concord where they attended a NASCAR race. The race winner was Lee
Petty, father of Richard Petty. Jim has maintained his interest in auto
racing since that time and has personally driven stock and open-wheel
race cars around the New Nashville Speedway at an average speed of
160 miles per hour. He claims to be MTSU’s fastest-known professor
emeritus.
Dr. Fred P. Colvin, professor emeritus, joined the History Department in
1969, teaching European history. He served as Faculty Senate president
and director of graduate studies in the History Department. He later developed and taught courses in Canadian history, the history of American
sport, and Tennessee history.
Dr. Robert Hunt—originally from Colorado and has been a practicing
historian of “modern war” for the last several years. His degree is from
the University of Missouri-Columbia. He attained the position at MTSU
twenty-five years ago.
