A Report from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Planning, and Research
August, 2014
Middle Tennessee State University
General Education Exit Exam
2013-14 Results
Executive Summary
The CCTST is MTSU’s chosen instrument to assess general education as required by the
Tennessee Performance Funding program. Fall 2007 was the first official administration of
the CCTST at MTSU, following a two-year pilot of the test. The CCTST requires students
to draw inferences, make interpretations, analyze information, draw warranted inferences,
identify claims and reasons, and to evaluate the quality of arguments using brief passages,
diagrams and charts.
In summary, the 16.9 average Total Score for seniors tested was
slightly below the national average of 17.1. MTSU will receive 13 points
for this Performance Funding standard.
MTSU’s average Total Score was 16.9 compared to the national average of 17.1. The
CCTST provides five subscores for individual students in addition to the Total Score.
Subscores for deductive and inductive reasoning, as well as the skills of analysis, evaluation
and inference are included in this report. This additional information provides a better tool
for departmental faculty to plan and implement actions intended to improve students'
abilities and scores in the tested areas.
Scores for students with multiple majors are counted in each major officially declared by
the student. Readers of the report are urged to read all notes printed at the bottom of the
tables for further clarification.
The 2013-14 results equate to 13 points - for general education assessment in the
Performance Funding program. According to THEC's schedule, institutions will be notified
of the total points awarded in mid-December.
