MA in International Affairs Program:

Practicum Resource Handbook

The M.A. in International Affairs offers preparation to students for careers in an increasingly globalized world by providing them with a unique combination of analytic research, and practical applications tools for employment in international affairs; international business; domestic and international non-governmental organizations focusing on poverty alleviation, human rights, or environmental policies; foreign policy organizations; government; analysis and risk management firms; homeland security; and the military.

This handbook was put together to help students find meaningful internships in fulfillment of the program’s practicum requirement. It is recommended that students pursuing the practicum option should begin looking for internship opportunities during their first semester in the program. Ideally, a practicum during the summer following the student’s first year in the program is preferred. Students should work with the Director of Graduate Studies for approval of practicum and arrangements regarding preparation of the report following the practicum.

The format used in organizing the information in this report is based on that used at

Tufts University Careers in International Affairs TUFTShttp://ase.tufts.edu/ir/careerListing.htm. Our thanks go to them. Otherwise, we abstracted and double checked the contents and descriptions of the various organizations from their websites

Dr. Moses Tesi, Director of Graduate Studies, Jordan T. Cassadine, student worker, and

Cassiah Smith, Graduate Assistant, helped put this together. Dr. David Carleton and

Dr. Stephen Morris read and made comments on the first draft and Dr. Carleton wrote the introduction.

Other Internship Programs ............................................................................................................. 65

Introduction

If you are choosing to complete a professional internship rather than write a thesis, the internship is a crucial component in your graduate career. As with a thesis, it is meant to be the culmination of your program. It is an opportunity to synthesize what you have learned in seminars and become a professional practitioner in the field of

International Affairs. Beyond this, it is an opportunity to hone networking, interviewing, and essential job search skills.

The professional internship is the single best opportunity you have to accomplish goals that are important to you: 1) learning how to apply the concepts, theories, and skills from the seminar room to real world problems, 2) learning how to operate as a professional in the field, and 3) improving your prospects for landing a full-time position in the field.

Given how essential the professional internship will be to your future:

-A- You should invest the needed time to determine your career goals

and, thus, the type of internship experience you want and need;

-B- You should start the process of locating an internship well in

advance, to maximize your opportunity to locate and land the

type of internship you want and need; and,

-C- You should aim high—do not settle for just “someplace to work,”

but find THE organization and THE location in the world that is

right for your career aspirations.

Your Career Goals Should Determine Your Internship

Everything should flow from your personal career goals, and, thus, this is where you need to start. The clearer you are about your own goals, the easier and more successful your search will be for a valuable internship.

Professionally, where do you want to be 5 to 10 years from now? You are building a career and it is crucial you think about the type of career you actually want:

What aspect of International Affairs do you want to be working in?

What kind of organization do you want to be working for—U.S. government agencies, an international organization, a non-governmental organization, a private firm?

Which part of the organization do you want to be working in—administration, policy development, public relations, fundraising, human resources, field work

4

and implementation?

Are there specific cities, regions, countries where you want to be located?

How much income will you want/need?

The answers to these questions should guide your search for a professional internship.

Some of you already have clear answers to these questions, while others may need to do some serious reflection and research.

There are resources available to help you with this process—talk to your academic advisor, faculty members who have expertise in the area that interests you, MTSU

Career Services, The MTSU Graduate College and Graduate Student Association, and books and websites on careers in International Affairs. The raw information is available, but only you can think about the life and career you want.

Again, the more you think about these things and are clear about what you want, the easier it will be to find a professional internship that will help you build your career. It will not happen by itself; you have to make it happen.

Plan Ahead and Give Yourself the Time You Need to Find a Good Placement

Finding, applying for, and landing a professional internship that is exactly right for you will take some time, so plan ahead. Some organizations require more lead time, and some less, but assume you will need to apply for an internship opportunity approximately six months before the start time.

Plan ahead and give yourself the time you will need to go through the process in a thoughtful manner:

You will need to think seriously about your career goals, as discussed above.

You will need to work through this Handbook and online resources to find multiple organizations that fit your goals. You do not want to find one organization and pin all hopes on it, but find eight, ten, twelve organizations you might like to work for.

For each of these organizations, find out all you can about how they handle internships (or “practicums” or “fellowships”): o

How long do they want people to work with them on an internship? o

Does the organization have specific start and end times? o What type of work and experience will you be exposed to? o

Where is the internship located? o Do they provide any funding and/or housing? o

Who do you need to contact, and do they have a preferred method (paper, email, online forms)?

5

o What is their application process and schedule?

You will need to work up a professional resume and individualized cover letters.

You will need to meet the MAIA program requirements for the internship approval.

You will want to talk to your advisor, other faculty, and the Graduate College about any possible funding opportunities.

You will need to follow the application process and schedule for each organization precisely.

If you block out time and plan ahead, you will have a very manageable and very successful search. If you stall and delay and put yourself in a position where you have to do all of this very hurriedly, by contrast, you are likely to end up with an internship placement that fails to meet your career needs.

Aim High—Find the Right Professional Experience for the Career You Want

The professional internship is the culmination of your degree—do not cheat yourself by aiming for something small.

To gain the best experience and put yourself on track for a professional career, you should aim high, i.e., aim for an internship in a leading organization in the area of

International Affairs you aspire to, and be excited to go where these organizations are—Washington, New York, London, Brussels, Geneva, Tokyo, Mumbai, Pretoria, Sao

Paulo, or anywhere else in the world. Do not limit yourself to the Nashville area, or the

Southeast, or the United States. There are a tremendous number of organizations out there for students interested in International Affairs as a career, and this is your opportunity to join the field as a professional and practitioner.

If you aim low now, you will limit your career potential. If you aim high, however, your career and your chosen life will be better for it.
