RESEARCH AWARDS FOR PSYCHOLOGY STUDENTS, 2015-2016 Description and Eligibility There are two types of research grants: A. The Psychology Department invites students to apply for a Psychology Student Summer Research Award of $3000 for summer of 2016. In order to apply for this award, the student must also apply for a summer grant from the University (e.g., a Bangs Collier grant, etc.) for the project. If the University grant is awarded then the student will not receive the department grant. The Summer Research Award can be used for living expenses and is intended for students who will be enrolled at the University for the following fall semester. In special cases this enrollment requirement may be waived, with the understanding that such proposals would need to be especially outstanding in order to receive funding. B. Funds to cover costs associated with research projects conducted any time during the 20152016 year are also available. Any psychology major involved in research may apply for research grants of up to $500 to pay for research costs (e.g., participant payments, equipment or software, etc.). Grants exceeding $500 may be considered in extraordinary circumstances. Deadlines Summer Research Award applications are due on March 9, 2016 (this is also the due date for University summer research grants.) Applications for Psychology Student Research Grants may be submitted at any time during the semester and will be subject to rolling review. Evaluation Criteria The Summer Research Award is highly competitive. Decisions will be based on the strength and completeness of the written proposal, appropriateness of the proposed budget, and strength of a supporting letter from the faculty advisor. Correct usage of grammar, spelling and punctuation in the proposal is important, as are the contents of the proposal. Psychology Student Research Grant applications will be evaluated on first-come basis by a committee of faculty to assess the quality of the proposal and the necessity of the grant for completion of the research. Students are encouraged to apply for UEC research funds before applying for a Psychology Research Grant. Requirements of Award Holders Once the award is made, any deviation in expenditures from the approved budget must be reported to and approved by the Psychology Department. Once the funded research is complete, grant recipients are required to submit a summary describing the outcome of the research to the Psychology Department Chair (CMB 1046). Recipients of the Summer Research Award must present their findings in a Psychology Department Colloquium. Application Guidelines All materials (except the application form) should be typewritten. Complete applications should include: 1. Application Form with all signatures requested (below) 2.
