Report of the Planning Committee
to University Council
December 16, 1999
Items for Approval
1. Priority Determination Process
At its January 22, 1998 meeting, University Council approved A Priority Determination
Process for the University of Saskatchewan. This document outlined the structure, procedures, and
criteria for identifying academic priorities at the University of Saskatchewan. Implementation of the
procedures outlined in A Priority Determination Process for the University of Saskatchewan resulted
in the identification of Academic Priorities in Biotechnology as the first priority area for the
University in November 1998. This year, following the guidelines for Priority Determination, the
Planning Committee is recommending two new priority areas for the University of Saskatchewan.
Documentation on the proposed priority areas is enclosed. Also enclosed are the criteria used by
the Selection Committee, a list of all submissions received for the second round, and a description of
the proposed priority areas. Additional information on the Priority Determination Process, or on the
submissions received, may be viewed at the following website:
www.usask.ca/university_council/planning.
The Planning Committee now recommends:
1.
That the proposal, Northern Ecosystems Toxicology Initiative, be endorsed in principle
as the basis for establishing a priority area for the University of Saskatchewan as
defined in A Priority Determination Process for the University of Saskatchewan.
This is approval in principle; implementation of the proposal will involve
recommendations from the Committees of Council on the proposed programs and on
the proposed budget.
2.
That the proposal, Biomolecular Structure Research and Teaching Program, be
endorsed in principle as the basis for establishing a priority area for the University of
Saskatchewan as defined in A Priority Determination Process for the University of
Saskatchewan.
This is approval in principle; implementation of the proposal will involve
recommendations from the Committees of Council on the proposed programs and on
the proposed budget.
3.
That the selection process for the identification of additional priority areas for the
University of Saskatchewan be concluded with the submissions received for
consideration in June or November 2000 (pending resources and quality of
proposals).
Should the above recommendation be approved, the proposed timelines for submission and approval
will be:
For decisions in June or November 2000:
