DATE OF MEETING:
November 19, 2009
SUBJECT:
University of Saskatchewan Achievement Record
COUNCIL ACTION:
For information only
CONTEXT AND BACKGROUND:
The planning and priorities committee first submitted the University of Saskatchewan
Draft Achievement Record to Council May 21, 2009, as a request for input. After an
extensive period of consultation sponsored by the Provost’s Office, including a
symposium focused on the development of the record, the university’s first achievement
record is now finalized and submitted to Council as a key outcome of the Quality and
Accountability commitment of the Second Integrated Plan.
DISCUSSION SUMMARY:
The University of Saskatchewan Achievement Record is intended to provide a simple and
objective record, which clearly presents the university’s progress against a set of
assessment indicators called an “achievement record.”
The achievement record is comprised of a set of practical indicators within four broad
areas: teaching, learning and the student experience; research, scholarly and artistic
work; working together; and an engaged university. Each area contains a subset of
indicators and data, with additional detailed information found on the university web site.
The indicators chosen were selected based on their ability to report on progress towards
the university’s aspirations and core institutional priorities as reflected in the Second
Integrated Plan and for their capacity to record multi-year results.
The goal of the achievement record is to present a record of the university’s progress,
which is evidence-based, forthright, accessible, and presented with a minimum of
commentary to the university’s stakeholders, including the public. The achievement
record will enable the university to assess its performance relative to other comparable
institutions over time, and to continuously assess its own progress. Colleges and units are
encouraged to adapt the indicators to their own unique circumstances as necessary in
order to develop their own specific benchmarks. As the university advances in pursuit of
its strategic goals, the performance measures reflected within the achievement record will
also evolve.
The planning and priorities committee supports the achievement record as an important
means by which the university will ensure it is on track towards fulfilling its stated
commitments. The committee commends the Provost as commitment leader, and the
President as executive sponsor, for the consultative approach employed in the creation of
the achievement record and the timely manner in which the record was produced.
