Students receive lectures from academics and leaders of NGOs, many of whom are on the cutting edge of research and policy development in South Africa. Students complete an independent study project during the last four weeks of the program. Through coursework and community engagement, students discover the significant role that Durban has played in South African history, particularly its role in apartheid. South Africa is striving to implement a very progressive constitution, restructure local governments, deliver basic services to all communities, and come to terms with a high rate of societal violence and a still uneasy racial divide. Students on this program explore these issues, meet inspiring individuals making a difference across South Africa and contemplate the country’s future path.
