As viewers remove prints from the wall over the week, a new installation is revealed. By reverting to a gift economy, atkings tests the relations of consumption that have saturated the circulation of contemporary art. “Together,” he writes, "we will punch a hole in the gallery wall [with this] act of sharing.” Audra Balion brings the theatre into the art gallery and presents figurative paintings with two sculptures to engage the audience in an interactive meditation on the transformative qualities of masks and costume. Taking cues from Surrealism and Postmodern descriptions of the self as multiple and unstable, Balion pays close attention to the myriad construction of public identities. George Gingras pictures dream worlds populated by animals, spirits and figures ! swirling together in fantastic compositions that evoke personal quests, ancestral knowledge and personal Métis philosophy. The exhibition title L’om deu borr kaa wapahtuk translates as “a man who sees two sides,” and refers to the artist’s own spiritual and cultural search as a member of the Métis Nation. Reception: Friday, March 1, 7 ! 10pm Please contact the gallery for press photos and further information. Marcus Miller, Gordon Snelgrove Gallery Director 191 Murray Bldg.
