Western Carolina University NSSE 2012 Major Field Report Part II. Comparisons to Other Institutions Health Comparing your students majoring in Health fields to those in Health fields at your comparison group institutions The major field report category 'Health' includes the following majors: Allied health/other medical; Criminal justice; Dentistry; Health technology (medical, dental, laboratory); Medicine; Nursing; Pharmacy; Social work; Therapy (occupational, physical, speech); Veterinarian. Frequency Distributions Health Western Carolina University NSSE 2012 Major Field Report Part II. Comparisons to Other Institutions NSSE 2012 Major Field Report: Part II. Comparisons to Other Institutions Interpreting the Frequency Distributions Sample This report is based on information from all randomly selected or census-administered Health students for both your institution and your comparison institutions. Targeted and locally administered oversamples and other non-randomly selected students are not included. Variable Names The name of each variable appears in the first column for easy reference to your raw data file. BETWEEN Institution Comparisons on Major Categories NSSE data serve to identify institutional strengths and weaknesses in reference to selected comparison institutions, yet institution-level comparisons may not capture important variation in student engagement that can be found within key sub-populations such as major. This report displays the frequency distributions for the Health major category at your institution and at your selected comparison institutions. Class Frequency distributions are given separately by institution-reported class level. Of course, first-year student majors may be unstable, and their results should be interpreted with caution. Major Categories Self-reported majors (primary major if two were reported) were identified from the survey. Institutions had the option to customize how these were grouped, using up to eight related-major categories. Survey Item The items from the NSSE survey appear in the left column in the same order and wording as they appear on the instrument. Benchmark Items that make up the five "Benchmarks of Effective Educational Practice" are indicated by the following: LAC: Level of Academic Challenge ACL: Active and Collaborative Learning SFI: Student-Faculty Interaction EEE: Enriching Educational SCE: Supportive Campus Environment Response Options Response options are listed as they appear on the instrument. Major categories with fewer than five respondents in a given class are not reported. Comparison groups must contain at least three institutions with five or more respondents in the major category, or they remain blank. Comparisons to Other Institutions NSSE 2012 Major Field Report: Part II. Comparisons to Other Institutions Interpreting the Benchmark Statistics Benchmarks To focus discussions about the importance of student engagement and to guide institutional improvement efforts, NSSE created five Benchmarks of Effective Educational Practice: Level of Academic Challenge, Active and Collaborative Learning, Student-Faculty Interaction, Enriching Educational Experiences, and Supportive Campus Environment. Class Benchmark comparisons are given separately by institutionreported class level. Of course, first-year student majors may be unstable, and their results should be interpreted with caution. Major Categories Self-reported majors (primary major if two were reported) were identified from the survey. Institutions had the option to customize how these were grouped, using up to eight relatedmajor categories. Major categories with fewer than twenty respondents in a given class are not reported. Comparison groups must contain at least three institutions with five or more respondents in the major category, or they remain blank. Mean Weighting The mean is the All results displayed in this arithmetic average report are unweighted. of the students' benchmark scores where students answered at least 3/5ths of the benchmark items. Targeted and locally administered oversamples and other nonrandomly selected students are not included. BETWEEN Institution Comparisons on Major Categories NSSE data serve to identify institutional strengths and weaknesses in reference to selected comparison institutions, yet institution-level comparisons may not capture important variation in student engagement that can be found within key sub-populations such as major. This report displays the benchmark comparisons for the Health major category at your institution and at your selected comparison institutions. 57.5 54.1 55.3 46.1 44.5 44.4 15.5 15.8 15.5 Statistical Significance Statistical significance is reported as the probability that the difference is due to chance variation. Values lower than .05 meet the conventional standard for significance. The smaller the significance level, the smaller the likelihood that the difference is due to chance. Please note that statistical significance does not guarantee that the result is substantive or important. Large sample sizes (as with the NSSE project) tend to produce more statistically significant results even though the magnitude of mean differences may be inconsequential. It is recommended to consult effect sizes to judge the practical meaning of the results. Effe c t e Me a n Diff. It is calculated by dividing the mean difference by the pooled standard deviation. In practice, an effect size of .2 is often considered small, .5 moderate, and .8 large. A positive sign indicates that your institution’s mean was greater, thus showing an affirmative result for the institution. A negative sign indicates the institution lags behind the comparison group, suggesting that the student behavior or institutional practice represented by the item may warrant attention.
