(1) Of the three units of upper division coursework required outside the first major, the Connections course will count for one unless it is used to meet a major requirement. (A) Three courses from ENGL 221- 226, 340–349. (B) One course from ENGL 380, 391, 474, 475, 478, 481, 482, 483, 484, 485, 486 (360, 470, or 471 when appropriate see Bulletin). (C) One course in English at 300–level or above (excluding 301 and those that count for core). (D) Two units from ENGL 202, 203, 306. (E) Two units from ENGL 402, 403, 472. NOTES: Students must have 2.0 in all courses applied to the major, with no grade below C-. ENGL 440-489 require relevant survey (ENGL 221-226) or permission of instructor as prerequisite. At least one of the ten units taken for the English major must be a course in literature before 1800 (ENGL 221, 222, 224, 350, 351, 440, 441, 443, 446, 473, 483, [360, 470, 471 when appropriate see Bulletin]). The English Department strongly encourages its majors to obtain speaking and writing competence in a foreign language.
