Appendix B-2a: Summary of Students’ Responses Note: 1) Numbers after and within each summary statement represent survey IDs randomly assigned to all respondents. Please use these numbers to refer back to students’ original comments. 2) Percentages in brackets for each category are based on total respondent of 713. For example, 87 comments out of 713 is 12.2%. Curriculum related (87 comments, 12.2%) Some students suggested that there should be more course offerings 20, more choices of classes 29, 110, more electives 576, and more night classes 503. Specific examples include: there should be more biology courses 642; literature major should include more studies of American literature 199; and ‘actually offering classes that are in the guide’ 110. Students want to learn more real world materials and projects. For example, finance jobs use Excel but ‘the program barely went into depth about how to perform higher level Excel projects such as pivot tables in any finance course’ 413. Graphic design does not cover 'actual production environments in the real world' 484. A few students think that the experiential component is ‘unnecessary and uneducational’ 553, activity time conflict with other classes 2, work demand and grading differ from class to class 580. A few students do not see the need for Gen Ed courses 580, and see Gen Ed as tedious 206. Other comments include: some class contents are repetitive 576 and Ramapo should have better communication with UMDNJ for joint programs 157. 2 129 290 421 574 701 11 134 299 426 576 704 20 148 315 431 580 25 152 324 442 582 27 157 330 453 586 29 165 335 465 598 36 174 366 484 606 37 196 367 487 611 81 199 369 488 612 82 204 372 498 630 85 206 381 500 640 105 246 384 503 651 110 249 404 510 662 118 256 412 553 672 121 265 413 558 679 122 274 416 564 694 125 281 420 570 695 Administrative services (62 comments, 8.7%) Students suggested that staff in offices should be trained on how to communicate with students 458, 492. Some complained that staff in some offices are rude 5, treating people dis-respectively 374, and talk to 96 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 students at a condescending level, even when students serve on committees and boards, they are not treated as equals 458. Some complained that staff are not helpful, ‘just send you to someone else’ 30, 43, 211. There should be better communication between offices 583. The lack of inter-office communications leads to ‘shuffling students around where they get no answers’ 124. Students get frustrated with the confusing process of going from office to office 110, 225, 250. Other suggestions include: offices should open longer 146, and longer library hours 161. 1 158 333 530 5 161 374 553 9 176 380 556 13 186 393 579 21 199 404 583 26 206 408 601 30 211 437 682 38 217 439 685 43 222 446 686 56 225 447 697 84 227 458 709 102 247 463 104 250 466 110 291 480 114 307 492 124 308 503 146 326 527 Weekend social/ recreational activities (45 comments, 6.3%) Students suggested that there should be more events and activities especially for the weekends; more accepting of Greek life; more fraternity /sorority organizations; more programs and opportunities for students to know each other and to meet new people; and make more events known to students. A few students suggested that Ramapo should have a football team. 31 218 401 54 233 406 65 243 411 79 245 429 97 260 435 100 276 494 108 289 500 127 295 517 139 297 654 156 303 660 160 322 696 164 323 172 331 184 333 191 338 202 346 208 400 Public safety and rules too strict (41 comments, 5.8%) While three students suggested that public safety should be stricter in some areas such as ‘what goes on in dorm rooms’ 50, 208, 456, more students complained that public safety and policies are too strict. A student suggested to change the rule of 'being guilty of in the presence of alcohol' 268; a couple of others suggested to have a place for students to drink and have ‘wet houses’ 241, 685. A number of students also complained about fines and parking tickets, and public safety is more lenient on some occasions than others. 92 312 536 149 316 573 159 317 588 179 329 656 183 342 663 188 346 677 212 378 685 222 382 229 403 241 419 253 427 259 430 268 432 270 458 287 471 289 478 293 503 Professors (37 comments, 5.2%) Students suggested that professors should have real life /field experiences in the subject they are teaching 487. A few professors teach by the book not applying experience 366. There should be more real life challenges and learning 372. 97 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 Some professors are knowledgeable and have life experiences but are not doing well at communicating to and teaching their students 203. Some professors are 'extremely outdated, out of touch with the students and unmotivated' 180. Some ‘seem to care little about developing what they teach as times change’ 576, 17. Some have 'no lesson plans', give 'unwarranted grades', ‘didn't even like their jobs’ and ‘were quick to pass judgment’ 625. Other suggestions include: there should be more professors in some subject areas 148, and more communication with professors 562. Professors ‘should not curse consistently in class’ 346, and they should not allow texting on cell phones in class 290. 5 413 683 17 444 690 40 477 692 69 484 77 487 120 534 130 562 148 566 180 576 203 580 214 598 290 614 300 625 332 634 346 642 366 665 372 679 Advisement (36 comments, 5%) A few students find that advisement is confusing /conflicting 485; different people at the advisement center give different advices 641. A student suggested that ‘advisors have at least a little bit of experience in the fields/subjects that they're advising’ 208. Advisors should be knowledgeable and aware of all aspects of the student's academic career 185, 509. There are complains about faculty advisor mis-match with the student's major 578, and some faculty advisors do not care about students' needs 692. A few students feel that they need more help on graduation preparation 195, and more advisement on how to apply for Law school 151. 3 260 642 26 336 692 29 346 34 380 61 411 64 425 89 447 110 485 122 493 151 509 157 566 185 568 192 569 195 578 206 583 208 634 220 641 Scheduling /registering /procedures (29 comments, 4.1%) Some students feel that scheduling and housing processes are hectic, confusing and stressful 94, 275. There should be more sections of shorter hours - 3-hour night classes are not as effective 375. There should be more choices of classes and time for part-time students 335. One student suggested that ‘classes need to be made available at more than one time block because many classes that are needed overlap’ 557. Procedures should be clearer such as registering, getting into a program, obtaining funding for programs, etc. 393, 473. Policies such as alcohol, club rules need to be clearer 344. One student complained that 98 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 judicial hearing process was not carried out as it is supposed to 114. Another student complained about the resident check out policies: he/she had to check out the same day when he/she had evening exams 458. 9 451 21 458 70 473 94 489 114 502 134 542 159 553 226 556 271 557 275 577 278 642 286 713 335 344 375 393 430 Commuters /adult learners (28 comments, 3.9%) Suggestions from commuters and adult learners include: offer more classes late in the day and in the evening 501, 335, 362, 514. There should be a commuter parking lot 651, 219, closer parking privileges for 'mature' students, and more benches along the way from the parking area going up hill 712. There should be an orientation for part-time, night students 89. ‘As a commuter I never really knew what was going on with the campus and some small things like getting a new ID sticker’ 446. Other comments include: develop and promote programs for adults planning to go back to school and complete their education 238; offer more services to adult students 512; commuters should be more involved with school activities 45, 202. 45 512 89 514 140 526 202 544 213 595 219 635 238 644 284 651 315 701 335 708 362 712 379 383 389 446 501 503 Equipment /technology /facilities (22 comments, 3.1%) While four students complained that there is too much construction 18, 32, 53, 357, more students pointed out areas that need updates. These suggested updates include: science labs 450, 521, library facilities 652, 689, technology 264, facilities 622, sculpture facilities 367, academic buildings 520, bigger studio spaces for art majors 651, renovate the academic wings 520, bathrooms A through D wings 686, and Road Runner cafeteria is too small 219. 109 640 133 651 154 652 219 686 264 689 282 348 365 367 450 482 515 520 521 604 616 622 Parking (20 comments, 2.8%) Some students complained that parking is too far away 20, and hard to find a parking space especially for commuters 503, 635, 644. 20 700 213 701 241 712 262 342 389 457 471 481 99 503 546 602 620 633 635 644 651 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 Food (19 comments, 2.7%) Students’ suggestions include: more choices 271, 685, more healthy food 346, better food quality at Birch 5, 264, and more space to sit especially at 1:00pm 236. One student suggested that meal plan shouldn't be mandatory for dorms without full kitchens – ‘students can cook in microwave’ 5. 5 647 153 685 236 258 261 264 267 271 346 370 403 460 540 547 567 631 643 Diversity /campus climate (19 comments, 2.7%) There should be more students from different backgrounds 388, 541, more sensitivity towards diversity 539, have hate crime education for incoming freshman 166; and provide more opportunities for students of different background to mix and mingle 391. A few students noted that some students are not serious about learning 42, and the learning environment is frustrating ‘when most students are not learning’ 690. One student commented on the gym: it is new but it is rundown and filthy, mats are never cleaned, and mirrors have been broken for months 346. This student also noted that pledges for fraternities do 'weird' actions and considered that ‘hazing’ 346. 31 690 42 695 58 72 166 319 346 350 388 391 449 491 537 539 541 575 599 More rigorous courses (16 comments, 2.2%) Some students feel unchallenged, unmotivated 115. Average is B in most classes, 'makes A a lot less worthwhile' 349. One student received knowledge related to his/her field prior to coming into Ramapo and found himself /herself breezing across some areas of study 607. ‘People treat Ramapo College as high school 2.0' 423. Some teachers are too lenient in grading and 'pass students who should not have passed' 14. Some teachers change grading policy and drop a test when half of students failed, ‘not fair for those who did well on the test’ 5. Some professors have been here a long time and don't challenge the students enough 683. Students’ other suggestions include: offer more advanced courses in some majors to better prepare for graduate school 135, 137; more tests - 'for many students no tests means no initiative to work' 690, and courses should cover the demand/need for real world 484. 3 5 12 14 115 135 137 199 254 100 349 423 478 550 607 683 690 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 Job related concerns (13 comments, 1.8%) Students are concerned about job opportunities 451, 229, 220, 22, suggested that classes need to relate more to the major and career 40, and complained that courses in certain majors are not adequate for real life jobs 484, 40. Students would like to have 'better companies that are in more fields at the job fair' 401, 353, for example, 'art-related employers at job fair' 598. Students expressed the need for more direct assistance to post-graduate planning 306, 239, and more help in finding and choosing a career 504. 22 40 220 229 239 306 353 401 451 484 504 598 638 Internship /field experiences (13 comments, 1.8%) Some students expressed the need for more field experiences early on 613, 532, 324, and intern full-time for a semester or whole year 286, 265. They would like to have more opportunities 538, more career event for non-seniors 119, and more networking opportunities with alumni 59. 59 119 265 286 310 324 375 461 503 532 538 606 613 Tuition and cost (12 comments, 1.6%) Students would like to have lower tuition 201, 591, 678, 711, and more major related classes 93. Other cost-related suggestions are: parking fee should be optional for those taking mostly online courses 518, and the cost for replacing ID cards is too high 346. 75 93 201 217 346 511 518 545 591 624 678 711 Transfer students (8 comments, 1.1%) Some transfer students would like more opportunities for them to integrate and get connected 468, 427, 596. One student said that it is hard to make friends when transfers room with transfers only 619. A couple of students suggested different programs for transfer students ‘so a transfer is able to learn the curriculum’ 28, 145, and more support in advisement for transfers 583. 28 145 247 427 468 583 596 619 Communication (7 comments, 1.0%) 101 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 A few students found it hard to find info on college website 553, 217. Some suggested that there should be more communication among different areas of the school 344, 211, and more communication with professors 562. One student believes that students should be involved in decision making, for example, the decision of taking SARM (Student Activities Revenue Management) to the budget office 169. 169 211 217 295 344 553 562 102 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 Appendix B-2b: Students’ Comments by School Affiliations and by Survey IDs to the Question: What Would You Change About Ramapo College? School of American and International Studies Survey ID 12 more rigorous courses 27 Greater course diversity 39 Maybe a better chance to earn a minor or a concentration 40 The classes I had to take and pay for that were pointless to my major and my career horrible professors that waste my time. 50 Security should be stricter in regards to what goes on in dorm rooms. 70 payment: I wasn't able to pay the tuition by credit card. 93 Less expensive and more major-related classes 97 More events on Saturday nights 102 uncooparative attitude of offices and administration 125 Experiential learning does not seem to help the students at all. 152 I think the AIS School should receive as much funding and support as the Anisfield Business School gets. 156 I think Ramapo should make more of an effort to keep people on campus during the weekends to create more of a sense of community. I like the efforts of recent to have more weekend events and I think this needs to continue over the coming years. 169 I think there are a lot of decisions made without the knowledge of students. Isn't the reason a college exists is FOR the students? I think more decisions should made aware to students. I also think moving SARM to the budget office was a huge mistake since no one likes the extremely long process that it has! 103 especially with visa behavior of campus security Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 172 have more people stay on weekends 179 not have an in the presence" alcohol policy. Being a young senior I didn't turn 21 until October while most of my friends were already 21. The current policy prevents me from hanging out with them when they're drinking even if I don't drink and I don't think I should get in trouble for hanging out with my friends." 181 financial aid program 188 the strictness of security 191 For some reason this campus is not an easy place to make friends. I joined a fraternity and it changed my college experience completely. Before I joined I was thinking about leaving this school because the social life was so bad. I did not feel socially comfortable. This college is a great place to go if one is able to do something other than just academics. 192 Some of the academic advisement was lacking 199 I WOULD CHANGE THE ADMINISTRATION!!!!! This school has absolutely no idea how to work as a whole institution. The internal structure is appalling; no department has any idea what the rest are doing. As for the Literature Major program they cram British and Medieval Literature down our throats but God forbid we should have a course on literature from our own country! The closes we come to American Literature is Survey to American Lit. and we only barely make it past the Revolution. There was literature in the twentieth century!!!! As a literature major if I had to base my recommendation on the faculty Ramapo would win hands down. However as a majority of the experience relies on the program itself I would NEVER recommend Ramapo for a serious literature major unless they ONLY cared for international lit. 201 They spend a lot of money on weird stuff like that building being put up by the post office on campus. More money should be spent on lowering the tuition instead. 217 The website isn't that great. Residence life leaves something to be desired. The school should be more technologically advanced the library should be more expansive and tuition should not be as high as it is unless the school invests in making such things a reality. 225 The run around I get when I have a problem. Having to go from office to office to get one thing done. 274 More history classes available 278 the difficulty in registering for classes and for rooms 281 better grad programs so I could continue my education at Ramapo. more help from the teacher education department 104 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 295 Expand on events make them more known through use of teachers rather than a few e-mails and flyers 317 Security and penalties with partying. 324 The teacher education program should have a junior field class where the majority of the time you are in a high school middle school or elementary school prior to student teaching 327 Bigger 329 security or public safety does not have the safety of the students in mind. they seem to be more focused on giving traffic citations and alcohol violations than being available when students want an escort across campus or help because they feel unsafe. 332 Some of the older professors have a slightly different view now than the newer ones. 333 the organization of the faculty and staff and events and people actually staying at school 335 parking 357 I liked that it was a very nature oriented campus when I came here and I am not happy that they have been really been building up everywhere these last few years. 374 I have seen the security staff often treat other students very disrespectfully. I would have them take some sort of training in how to confront students. 399 underground tunnels 400 I think that there are not enough things going on sometimes. Unless you involved in a club or group which is no always the easiest thing to get involved in you have nothing to do. Making groups and Greek life more accepted among the faculty and staff within the college would get more people interested in joining. 408 parking 412 The history program 419 The policies dealing with clubs such as events and conferences and SARM. 420 courses 439 The overwhelming bureaucracy 442 Class selection being too limited class choices and time of class for adult pat-time students public safety"" 105 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 444 The course requirements and quality of some teachers not to be confused w/ professors in the Teacher Ed. Program. 446 As a commuter I never really knew what was going on with the campus and some small things like getting a new ID sticker. Also the Bursar's Office and the Residence Life office workers are extremely rude. I had a problem with Res Life while studying abroad and even though they were the ones who made the mistake it took 3 overseas phone calls for them to fix and I received a lot of attitude from the woman I spoke to on the phone. 449 The overall infrastructure ranging from support staff to faculty to the food to weekend events to the President only caring about money to the emphasis on Business majors and no one else. 458 I would change the serious amount of red tape that goes into everything. Even to plan an event on campus you must fill out numerous forms in different offices that often do not communicate effectively. The design standard is a perfect example of having policies just to have policies. Also I would require professional staff in the different offices bursar registrar SD etc. to go to workshops that teach them how to effectively communicate with students. Many offices on campus talk to students at a condescending level and even when students serve on committees and boards with them we are not treated as equals. In order to work at college employees should have a respect for students that they expect to receive in return. I would also make massive overhauls to Residence Life related policies especially check out policies. The fact that 2 of my four years here at Ramapo I have had to check out of my Residence Hall on the same day that I have an evening exam is unacceptable. Residence Life often institutes policies in the name of protecting the students learning environment in relation to noise and drinking policies however when it comes to allowing me to have time to study for my exams instead of worrying about packing that is not the case. 463 Security it was not that great 466 Administration. These people made my life as a college athlete difficult. We were not supplied with the proper necessities needed for competition in athletics. Everyday was a constant struggle to get a gym time or to work on the new turf field. It is a complete embarrassment and needs to be fixed if you wish to attract more college athletes. 480 Poor administrative decisions with regards to student issues. 510 The entire Education department is extremely flawed and fails to give the Ramapo student an adequate base for teaching 512 It does not offer enough services to adult students 515 Add more housing 106 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 525 How the nursing department is run. The teachers there are not the most helpful to students having trouble and then when you don't pass the class you are kicked out of the program. You can reapply but they almost never accept anyone back. They are also not encouraging at all that you will succeed in anything once you fail their program. It is also not right that for a C grade in the nursing department it is an F and that is what goes on your transcript and gets factored into and ruins your GPA. 527 The people that work in the offices are very rude and do the least possible to help you with certain situations for example the bursars office. 543 nothing exceeded expectation 578 I am a literature major and was assigned the head of the Spanish language studies major as my advisor. Therefore I had no guidance in choosing my classes. 582 The constant changes in requirements for majors and minors. 602 The parking 608 Reconstruction on the academic buildings/classrooms. 610 Nothing 638 preparing students for the future 641 Advisement center-I was told multiple answers from different people about different things. it difficult to feel important at the school 643 I would change the food plan for Laurel Hall 644 the huge hill going to the class rooms from the commuter parking lot. 692 Please do not let xxx xxxx be an adviser... he was terrible. Did not care about what I needed one bit. Drop that hack from advisement please!!!! 708 Offer many more classes to full time working students. time courses. 709 Stop giving your students the run around. It wastes too much time and is very stressful. I almost didn't graduate because of that. I don't want the same situation to happen to other students. 107 It made It was a struggle to find the right night Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 School of Contemporary Arts 2 I do not like the experiential component that is necessary for every with 20 credits working full time and now I'm supposed to do outside it's unnecessary work that only adds pressure to the students. Plus these movies but they're always shown when I have other classes so I 3 Make the advisement process better. The people there were no help at all. 11 more information more readily available about classes and readings etc 13 Beaurocracy 21 The organization of registering for classes and housing - The residence life department needs to be restructured. 22 Like St. John's University to guarantee me a job after graduation 28 I would have different programs for transfer students so a transfer is able to learn the curriculum. 30 I have felt that no one outside my major department have been helpful and I have found it irritating to deal with most other departments such as SARM and especially the Cahill Center. Often you get sent around to 5 other departments to get things done and people do not seem to know everything happening in their own department. 31 more school spirit and events 33 nothing. 35 nothing 38 Get rid of security. They are useless. 53 Stop the expansion -- more buildings are making the campus ugly. selective. 59 I do not think RCNJ provides many networking opportunities with alumni especially within the Communications fields. 65 I would like to see more programs so that students can get to know each other during their freshmen year. I don't feel like there was a great opportunity to meet new people. 75 the price tag 108 class. I have enough going on work also? I just think that have the time we have to watch can't even go to them. More difficult classes. Keep it small and if thus necessary Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 77 One of the professors I've had hindered my learning experience and I can honestly say I learned nothing from her. She is clearly only here because of tenure. 80 I'd change the way the administration doled out their information to the media groups on campus. 84 security/public health and safety advisement 100 Perhaps a few more school sponsored activities. It's not a huge deal since the school is sort of a commuter one anyway. 133 Better art class facilities supplies well 135 The music program is very far behind other schools. When I was applying to graduate schools I had to learn new concepts that were already second nature to other graduation students. I had to fight to have a music theory III course at this school which is a requirement at most schools with music programs. 139 Football team 145 I would change the program they have for transfer students 159 better communication dept. More organized class/housing selection public safety very rude and invasive not screwing students out of money through unnecessary fines. 160 Organization of social affairs. 166 I wish that we did not have the hate crimes that we did on campus. This is more of an issue with the student body than anything else but perhaps some sort of hate crime education would be in order for incoming freshmen. 174 Better music and fine arts program. 184 I'd want the school to be more accepting of Greek life - I've always felt that we've been put to the side and looked down upon. Ramapo students never got to see how much we do for the school and community. 186 I was most frustrated by never being able to get questions answered that were important to me. The lack of helpfulness and poor attitude among those working at the college was very discouraging 189 I commuted so my experience was different from most. I don't think I would change anything. 195 Increase graduation preparation aid for minority students. I really wish there were more places to hang out outside as 109 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 203 The theater program needs restructuring with its professors. They are knowledgeable and have life experience are not doing well at communicating to and teaching their students. 223 nothing 229 I would make it bigger make security a little less strict you a job after graduating. 231 I wish I lived closer and commuted 233 It is very isolated - but I feel that can't change. Berrie Center by the school as a whole. 243 Make more events known to students. 247 the policy on transfer students not graduating with honors- also the commuter parking/ way that commuters are treated situation. also the nastiness that I have encountered from every person working on campus that wasn't in the theater department 256 the way classes are always changing 260 social life have more activities get more involved and learn how to get more involved more advisors more classes to choose from clubs to join 261 The food was terrible! 270 public safety. They are WAY to strict and the parking tickets suck and they give them out for no reason and charging for new IDs. 284 Better accommodating to commuters 289 The social life sucks and security/public safety needs to seriously back off and let us have rights and treat as adults and show us the respect we deserve. 292 not sure. 303 more weekend activities 307 Staff reaching out to help students more. 310 The Career Services Program 314 Nothing. 110 and develop a program that can grantee I would like to see more attention paid to the Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 315 The amount of lab time in studio art courses. school during assigned lab times. 322 have more events the first year so there is more interaction between students throughout the following years 340 I think the school is awesome and is in a great area and surrounding I just wished it was closer to where I lived. 344 The way things are run is quite confusing. There should be much more communication between different areas of the school. The left hand never knows what the right hand is doing. Club rules should be solidified as well because that continues to be more and more confusing each year. 348 The use of funding; we should have more dorms first and other non-necessities like the Spiritual Center after. 350 The climate and how people don't socialize. 353 The Cahill Center needs to have more resources for majors other than Business! I am a Communications major with a focus in graphic design--the Cahill Center had no resources or contacts to help me find a job after college. The job fair is noticeably lacking diversity in the companies present. 365 The Communications program is really working toward becoming a great program. professional equipment to really make the Communications program worth it. 367 improve the art program. 369 More film acting courses with different levels of difficulty. 372 some professor's do not teach enough and just sit back and let things happen. Better lessons. More real life challenges and learning 379 Commute service should be vastly improved. County especially Fort Lee area. 401 The events don't keep many people on campus on weekends but I had to go home to work as I couldn't get a job on campus. Better companies that are in more fields at the job fair. A lot of the red tape to put on events advertise go through SARM etc. were a nightmare and unnecessary. 405 Nothing 430 Easier class registration less strict security. Offer printmaking. It is very difficult for commuters to return to the It could use more Improve the sculpture facilities. Perhaps shuttle bus at certain location throughout Bergen Make the school less fine-happy 111 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 453 I would add sport management physical education or sports psychology 465 More class offerings 471 Public Safety handing out tickets for misdemeanor fines. Such as being given a ticket even though you had already paid for parking. I felt it was just a way of collecting money from paying students. Not right. 481 the parking 484 The entire Graphic Design related program - the Design & Interactive Media concentration barely scratches the surface of the field. I learned practically nothing in the core courses of the curriculum compared to the work experience I have had while enrolled at Ramapo College. The program does not even cover the essential basics there is practically nothing taught about actual production environments in the real world. Instead the professors push lazy courses through with minimal coverage of the essential computer software used in day-to-day work. A serious restructuring needs to be done to this program as it is more or less useless to anyone looking for a job that has little to no experience in the field which would be 90% or higher of the students in the curriculum from my experience in the classes . There is no way most of the students would ever be able to work in a production environment with the education given in this program. 488 More courses in 3D design possibly a concentration 492 The entire administration aspect of the school was incredibly horrible. The people who run several departments such and the Cahill Center Residence Life security DO NOT CARE about the students in the slightest bit. The entire school structure lacks any type of customer service. The book store and cafeteria service constantly take more money from students only to provide very bad service and product. I mean who ever worked out the contracts with these out sourced companies really screwed up somewhere. Also the student health insurance went from bad to worse. Not only does it cover less now but Ramapo doesn't cover what the insurance misses to cover. I am sorry but not covering testing of any kind is a big deal. A student SHOULDN'T be denied service at health services because he or she can’t afford the lab testing. I am completely convinced that Ramapo College of New Jersey doesn't care about their students. If you want some suggestions about how to make the school better read some books on customer relations and service. 494 Greek life 504 I think we need to help students from arts major more about find and choose their career after graduated. 509 advisers need to know things better 112 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 511 The tuitions lab hours... 531 I would've gotten involved in Greek life a lot sooner. 537 The school is not equally diverse during any semester the is more of one race ethnicity than the others. 545 I really don't know. I was so happy with everything. If I had to change something I guess it would be to make it a little cheaper. 556 activities the housing process the registration process the administrative offices 558 Ramapo sanctioned study abroad trips - so you don’t have to mess around with transferring credits. And in India it was an actual study abroad not a go to Europe to drink study abroad 566 Professors xxxxxxxx and xxxxx need to not be college professors. Their teaching tactics of intimidation and condescendence were in part one of the struggles I encountered at Ramapo. I know that there are many other students who definitely feel the same way. When I first went to Ramapo advisement told me that it would take me 2 years to complete my bachelor's degree. 2 years in they then said I would have to go another year if I wanted that degree. After a year of getting nowhere with constant meetings phone calls and e-mails I finally talked to you the Provost and got it straightened out with much appreciation by changing my major thank you by the way . The whole experience was extremely stressful and disheartening and if I knew that I would have had to go through what I went through I would have ultimately chose a different college. 570 The overall structure and material taught in the Digital Filmmaking concentration. 579 I would not have gone to the same school as my ex boyfriend he made my life here not as enjoyable. He's the worst. And I would have the staff be more helpful with problems. 580 I really feel like the classes that I have to take to obtain a degree really are not beneficial. The general education requirements are ridiculous why should I have to take classes not related to my major? As well the experiential component is never consistent in any class. Some teachers grade this and it requires a lot of work some teachers ignore it. In general the experiential component is awful. I also wish there were more online classes offered. 588 I wish that the school would be clearer about some of their policies involving WebCT registration and housing which seem to change all the time. 595 make commuters more aware of activities 113 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 598 I was frustrated because two of my profs. In the social work program when that was my major were adjuncts and they were HORRIBLE--- I mean really really terrible. Neither of them came back for a second semester. So I was disappointed because I felt like I wasted my time... ...on the other hand I thought Colleen Asper in the art dept. was great. and I attended the screening for Jennifer Dudley and I felt the process for screening profs. was good... and it was hard to say why / understand why the other two were so terrible. Consistency I guess would have been better. Also-- not that it's really up to you I guess-- but art-related employers @ the job fair would really be good... I didn't go because there wasn't anybody from my field. 606 More classes for technical theater majors. The Cahill center having internships for those students who want to work behind the scenes not just in the box office. 607 I would change the intensity of the courses. Some felt like pushovers especially that I have received knowledge related to my field prior to coming into Ramapo. I found myself breezing across some areas of study. 611 I would make require more art history classes for visual arts majors. 616 equipment availability 623 too much to write 624 Spending is not well managed. 640 There needs to be added curriculum for the Design major as well as added computer labs and print stations. 646 I couldn't say at the moment. 651 THE PARKING and The art department. The parking is horrible. You need to have lots ONLY for commuters and a shuttle at night since its dark in the lots. Did anyone ever look at the art studios? They are really pathetic. There shouldn't be drafting tables in the drawing room and there should be bigger studio spaces for painters and drawers. It was just really sad. Art classes should held twice a week and be longer with lectures. 654 Students get more active in events 665 I would like teachers in the theater department who actually supported me. 672 require more studio classes for art majors to better prepare them for MFA programs As a member of several clubs I have seen too much money miscued. 114 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 683 I would change some of the professors that work in the department I study. I feel that they have been here a really long time and are slackers. They don't challenge the students enough. 702 I would hope more people would get involved in the Theater program and that they would have more recognition for the work that they do. It really is incredible what they can accomplish. 704 Some prerequisites for required courses. 711 I would offer more assistance to low middle class students like myself. My family doesn't have low enough income to receive assistance but it is not high enough for me not for feel pressured and struggling to make ends meet while attending school. Anisfield School of Business 1 public safety and reslife 14 Require teachers to grade stricter. I have seen many teachers be lenient graders to pass students who should not have passed. 16 nothing 18 stop building 20 Parking is too far away more course offerings more majors and minors 25 class availability 29 In the finance program there weren't any choices for electives and students were forced to pick certain classes because of availability. Also our advisor should make it their business to get in contact with us at least once in our 4-years here. 43 The way campus offices pass students around from office to office to get an answer to their question 52 everything 58 The culture of the school. 79 Social life. 89 I would find a way for the part time students to be more informed. The Daily Digest" reports are a great info sharing tool however I felt like I was always having to ask my advisor too many questions 115 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 about how things worked around campus. There should be an orientation for part time night students as well. Also during my 4 years at Ramapo I had 4 different advisors. I would recommend keeping a student with his or her advisor if possible." 94 scheduling and housing processes are too hectic and confusing 108 better social activities 109 I would make more room for people to eat 110 The advisement center. Having people that actually can answer my questions instead of leading me from one person to the next. Actually offering classes that are in the guide. 115 I think some professors care less about the courses than the students. There have been multiple occasions in the past four years in which I felt unchallenged and unmotivated in classes because the professors didn't seem to care. I hope that Ramapo and especially ASB can make sure to get on track and realize that the best education comes from the best professors. 119 I think there needs to be more or better publicized career events as well as some sort of internship fair for non-seniors. 129 I would make the IS major more hands on to help prepare students for the real world. 130 There are two courses: Federal Taxation and Cost Accounting that have taught for many years by only two Professors. I would love to see Ramapo bring on board other professors to teach these courses... 140 Treat commuting and on-campus students equally 147 nothing 148 The finance department is awful. You can go through the entire program with only having one professor no variety no other approach to learning finance concepts. I have not learned a single thing that will be useful to me in the workforce. The business core has taught me more than anything in my concentration. More professors in finance department are completely necessary it has discouraged me from furthering my education because I do not think I am prepared to do so. 149 Security needs to calm down and let the college life be. 158 The administrative offices like the registrar. I believe they can be really unhelpful some times. 180 Some professors were extremely outdated out of touch with the students and unmotivated. teachers all happened to have been here for an extended period of time. 116 These Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 185 I would make certain that every person responsible for advising a student is knowledgeable and aware of all aspects of the student's academic career. I found that people were completely clueless when it came to this. 204 I felt that the international business major just did not help me. Maybe it was because when I entered the classes required were not relevant to international business. I felt that the requirements were not organized and when the college switched to the new 4 credit system my advisor was not helpful. Therefore I felt that I lost a lot of time. However the new requirements for graduation for international business majors seem to be well organized and the classes that they are offering are more international business oriented. I just wish that I would have had the new requirements maybe I would have had a better experience and I would not have lost time. But I’m glad that I went to Ramapo. It is a really great school. Thank you. 206 I would change the general education requirements because they do tend to be tedious as well as advisement help or the way that the offices work due to lack of efficiency 218 More of a college setting...not many people stay on the weekends 226 Some housing procedures other governing bodies as well 227 Security is awful. 236 Need more food space to sit and enjoy your lunch especially during the 1pm lunch rush. 238 Develop and promote programs for adults planning to go back to school and complete their education. 246 The over-use of group work / assignments and the attendance policy. 249 Start the MBA program ASAP 253 Parking tickets 265 make you take an internship for at least a year 267 the light lunch at the birch tree inn was woefully inadequate 271 Lack of food choices class timing 276 Add a football team and or make the current athletics more integral in student activities 286 Offer more sections so that class times do not conflict with required coursework. The option to work as an intern full time for a semester. Ridiculous. 117 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 291 public safety 293 I would make public safety more lenient on certain restrictions. 299 More classes held more variety of professors 323 that more people stayed on campus 331 I would add more athletic programs/clubs/teams. 343 Nothing 345 Everything 349 The easy grades. worthwhile. 366 The professors teach primarily by the book not from experience. As a transfer student from Pace University I have found that the curriculum here is at the same level as Pace however the professor's teaching methods are mostly book based rather than experience knowledge and applying it to the lessons learned. 375 Recently I did the co-operative education for an internship and it was a very difficult process just with interviewing and other classes as well. I also think more class sections should be offered for each class. 7 out of the last 8 classes I had to take were 3 hour night classes when I do much better personally when classes are broken up and in the afternoon. I think this hindered my performance. 377 I wish it was less of suitcase school. 380 I would change the help you get from the bursar's office and advisors. It was difficult to get anything accomplished by going to see one person and felt like I was just being pushed off onto someone else and getting the run around. 382 I would provide a place on campus for students to drink and socialize without having to worry about getting busted" or distracting other students by creating this type of atmosphere in common living spaces" 384 I believe the experiential became more repetitive busy work as I increase in years attending. 386 The changing emphasis on MONEY. Average grade in EVERY class seems to be a B. 118 That makes my A's a lot less Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 388 Get more students from different backgrounds. My first year I felt very uncomfortable because there was not a lot of diversity. 413 Better finance teachers. Professor Haye was the only good one I had and learned from. Stop hiring people from City University xxxxx xxxxxxx achieved PhD's there. They seem to always be the worst professors. Offer more finance electives and teach us more real world material and projects. For example all finance jobs use Excel and we barely used the program and barely went into depth about how to perform higher level Excel projects such as pivot tables in any finance course. 431 Should offer more detailed courses within majors and minors 432 more partying allowed 435 students going home every weekend and leaving the campus empty 460 Allow appliances in Laurel Hall 477 Have professors care more about their students. 487 I would change the fact that Ramapo holds people back from graduating on time due to the lack of classes offered. Many people feel like the school would rather make students come back to take one class other than accommodate them. Also teachers with no real world experience should not be allowed to be college professors. 493 more experienced people to advise students about the classes. Major advisors are usually booked and or unavailable 514 Not much; may be more evening classes. As a full time working woman finding evening classes for many important courses was not easy 520 Renovate the wings of the school. They look like they're falling apart. I also wish there was a dedicated student union building. 536 security involvement 538 I would change the Cahill Center and offer more opportunities to Ramapo. I think it's ridiculous to have to pay a certain amount in order to obtain a sometimes meaningless internship. 540 Food 546 Parking 549 NOTHING let us enjoy college 119 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 564 the redundancy of some courses as well as seeing new ones added to make students more rounded individuals. 576 better professors some seem to care little about developing what they teach as times change. I felt management classes were extremely repetitive and electives were not offered so I was unable to take the classes I would have liked because they were never offered. 577 Allow students to become more involved with policy changes and decision making. 591 lowering the tuition for international students 596 More integration opportunities for transfer students. 600 Nothing 601 The Inconvenience they cause for students with scheduling housing and simple questions. 604 More on campus housing. 612 The lack of choices offered for my majors. semester 619 making transfer students room with transfer student because it is impossible to make friends when your roommates are transfers too 621 Not sure I really just came to class and then left did not do much outside of class work at the college 622 updated facilities 633 well about parking lot which is inconvenience hard to get closure parking or parking if they block the parking lot about the swimming pool there should be a lifeguard on time daily 656 how much power security has 662 Available courses in a given semester 663 parking rules in regards to tickets 685 There should be more wet houses. If you and your roommates are of age there should be no reason you can’t drink. Security is too strict they act like we are incompetent because we are in college. More food choices. Ramapo staff is unhelpful. They always just send you to someone else. On campus Greek housing I normally only had 3 electives to choose from each 120 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 699 I would try to lessen the number of commuters. community that my previous school had." The school does not have the large community" feel of 700 the parking!!!!!! 701 As soon as you enter the main building it smells food. More air-conditions. Parking problem is a must to change. More class options for working students for night time. Instead of group work in the classes give more lecture with more examples. 713 The public safety department wastes too much paper and time issuing pick-up and drop-off passes especially when the college is promoting environmentally-friendly efforts. There are not enough night classes offered in accounting. School of Social Science and Human Services 9 The registration process and the friendliness of the staff at Bursar's office. 26 Advisement - but this is something that needs to be worked on in every school from all that I have experienced. Advisement needs to do their job the way it needs to be done - Properly advising their students - not being short with them 32 too much construction. 36 more student body conferences that would allow for an educational experience and interactions with others 42 I feel that the student's attitudes lacked a little. I felt that some student's weren't serious about their education here. I know that's hard to change though. 45 get commuters more involved with the school 54 Larger scale on-campus events 56 security 61 One advisor in the advisement center is no help at all. The others are great. 63 nothing 69 I would like more professors who work with students and are concerned about their learning and knowledge rather then their grades. 121 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 81 The variety of classes offered within each major. 82 More courses available. 87 I can't think of anything at the moment 99 How difficult simple tasks are made to be sometimes 104 that departments communicated with each other. 105 more night classes 107 Nothing 114 1. I have had only 1 judicial hearing during my 4 years here and rather than having the opportunity to plead my case I was simply talked at and then dismissed. The purpose of a hearing is to decide if a person is guilty. In the United States until that decision is made one is innocent until proven otherwise. In my and other peers experiences we were guilty and there was no opportunity to prove otherwise. Although the judicial hearing is good in theory it is not carried out effectively in practice. 2. Ramapo needs more employees in the Registrar's office or at least ones that work. I went in several weeks before my graduate application deadlines to request transcript requests yet they were not sent out on time. This resulted in a significant loss of money the schools' inability to review my applications and many weeks of my wasted time preparing these applications and personal statements. I consulted the office and the clerk told me they were understaffed and had numerous requests. While I am understanding of the overwhelming amount of requests the 5 people working in the office were simply exchanging gossip rather than completing the pending requests. 120 I was happy that I was graduating as new professors were being hired. I enjoyed taking classes with professors that were actually in the Law Enforcement field i.e. Prof. Murphy Prof. Monarque Prof. Cook... I would have liked to see more Law and Society professors like them. Those were the classes that I preferred over the professors who had doctorate degrees with a wealth of theoretical knowledge. It was easier to learn and relate to the others. 121 more class times available 122 more classes better advisement. 124 Working in many offices I feel the inter-office communication is lacking which leads to shuffling students around where they get no answers. Each office has its own little issues but overall they present themselves well. I plan to continue working here so I hope to fix some of the issues I am considering. security on campus. 122 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 127 The social experience 134 I believe there should be mentors for core subject. Example in social work some things were new and the explanations were vague. Please have some sympathy for adult working student. 146 I would have everything open longer. 151 Need a pre-law advisor that meets with students EARLY that want to go to law school. It was very difficult figuring out and completing the entire law school application process on my own. It would have been helpful to have someone tell me freshmen year when I should take the LSAT when to apply how to go about writing a personal statement etc. 154 More single room options in the dorms. 161 more extensive library and hours 162 It can expand because we are doing so great...! 165 offer more sections of social work classes 176 I would change the lack of communication between staff and students. It seems one person tells you one thing while another individual tells you another. This is seen especially through changing of majors and in the education program. 212 I would change some of the silly rules that Ramapo has regarding scholarship. I had an issue with that in my sophomore/junior year. I felt that they were slightly unrelenting in the issue. 213 The commuter situation - better parking options. 220 more advisement and future job opportunities 224 that everything is not to be done online and that you can do some things manually 237 not sure 239 There was no help finding a job after graduation. 245 Ramapo is currently working on having a more active social atmosphere and I believe they should continue this. 258 Birch charging an arm and a leg for new ID cards & favoritism of the baseball team 262 parking 123 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 264 Update the technologies used and better food quality at the birch 275 Housing and scheduling classes was extremely stressful. 290 Enforce a stronger policy on cell phones in the classroom. Some professors have very laid back views on students texting during class and it is incredibly distracting. 297 I would continue to improve on campus entertainment and options so as to further encourage people to stay on campus especially on the weekends instead of going home. 306 more direct assistance for post-graduate planning 308 some staff 312 I feel that we are responsible enough to have alcohol during senior send off because we have been drinking all year a proved that we are responsible. I don't think it is fair that we are being punished for something that happened three years ago during the school year. 319 diversity - more 326 security 328 More students 330 class selection 338 There should be a football team. 342 SECURITY GUARDS AND PARKING. The tickets issued have become absolutely absurd and I have 150 dollars in tickets when I live at Ramapo and am allowed to park there. I understand the school needs money but how fair is it to charge college students this fee who have little or no income? 346 I would change the academic scholarship policy. A portion of the continuing scholarships should be given to sophomores and juniors who show great academic achievement not to just incoming freshmen who may do worse than other students. For example I had a 4.0/4.0 GPA and a 1260 SAT coming into here and received nothing while my friend who had a worse GPA and a worse SAT score received a full-tuition scholarship. He has a 3.8 GPA while I have a 3.9 GPA in college. I still receive nothing other than small private scholarships which I am very thankful for. This does not make any sense at all. The school needs a football team. Football unites the college and brings school spirit. It also may keep more people from leaving on the weekends. I found it very offensive to see a flyer for a Greek event called "What makes a Nigger?". This is outrageous to have. I was taught never to say that word. Plus the flyer had a bottle of alcohol in it. It makes the college look horrible. This event took place 124 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 early March 2009. I wonder if the President knew about it. What would he think? The gym in the Sharpness Center is new but it is now old and run down. It is absolutely filthy in there. I actually got Herpes near my eye not the sexual one and I believe I got it from the mats that are never cleaned. I do not see anybody cleaning in there. Why are there televisions near the windows that are not hooked up to cable? They are going to waste and I never saw them used. Install cable in them. I also suggest playing music in there too. For the future make a separate gym for the athletes. Also the mirrors in the gym have been broken for months. Please also buy more accessories for the cables. There needs to be more healthy food on campus. Although this might seem funny but why was warm grilled chicken taken away from the Pavilion? That was the best food there. Replacing ID cards should not cost $25 $50 and $100. They cost less than a $1 to make. Public Safety should just lift the gate open when driving on to campus. Why do we need to swipe our card? It is inconvenient and they see our parking sticker on the side of the car. The advisement here is horrible. The whole system needs to be revamped. Additionally pledges for fraternities should not be walking around like robots on campus with uniforms. Many of the Latin fraternities and sororities do this. I also heard a fraternity outside Laurel Hall making their pledges roar and do weird actions. Please do not say it is not hazing and it is part of their history. It is hazing and you know it is. This makes the college look bad as well. Room-mate selection for freshmen needs to be changed. Look at how other colleges do theirs. In my opinion professors should not curse consistently in class. " 362 Availability of classes for those who work full-time and could not afford to attend if they didn't work. 368 I don't know 370 THE FOOD. You hire people to serve food who do not want to be here. They are the most repulsive human beings I have ever seen serve food. You should fire them and hire culinary workers and not workers from Giants Stadium. Every time I go into Birch I feel that I am in a foreign restaurant on the border of Mexico and Texas. 378 Honestly I would change security there are to many problems that need to be address I think the security guards need to be train on how to deal with students. 381 Classes that non-majors are taking in a major area. Should have separate non-major and major classes. i.e. - Bio for majors and non-majors or a history class for non-majors and majors. 383 I would have loved it if there was more of a selection with social work courses in the evening and summer months. I work full time to support my family. I was fortunate my employer was flexible but for an adult trying to get their degree in social work I think the time frames could be an obstacle and may cause potential students to look elsewhere to find a program that fits into their lifestyle. But all in all the program was so worth the juggling. I would not have changed it. I knew this was the school for me after speaking to Mitch Kahn and Sue Scher. The professor were amazing. 125 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 393 I would make the administration more effective. It is very hard to obtain permissions for programs get funding and find out information. 403 The fines that they burden the students with were astronomical. Everything you did could potentially get you a fine from parking to having a mini-refrigerator in your room. The food was not the best and the application for graduation was very nerve racking and uncertain. 406 the incoming student body and the fraternities/sororities on campus 411 advisement and availability as far as the social work program activities as far as weekends 416 I was an environmental studies major and one of the problems I had is that I'm more of a hands-on learner and felt that wasn't provided to me. I feel that I would've learned a great deal more had I experienced more hands-on activities. 425 It's impossible to get any help from anyone who works there. You need to figure everything out on your own. 427 when I was a transfer student there wasn’t much for us to do and I felt disconnected from school and my classmates. Also security was always giving the students problems...even if we didn’t do anything wrong. I don’t agree with how they conduct business. 437 I had a problem with Bursar's office almost every semester that really triggered a lot of stress. 447 Advisement center. 451 more job opportunities shuttle back to dispatch method rather than waiting 30 minutes for it to come 456 I would want campus security to change drastically. Be stricter in some ways and ease up on other policies. 457 Parking 461 I felt it was really difficult to have the fieldwork and regular classes at the same time. 462 nothing 468 My opportunities for transfer students to get connected. 473 Everything is very confusing.. making a schedule getting into a program parking tickets etc. Things need to be more clear. The teaching department needs a ton of work as well 126 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 478 The lack of organization completely eliminate the to complete for students as most students do and on the administrative level in seemingly all departments. I would also experiential learning component to all classes. It is incredibly difficult who do not live on campus and work part-time much less who work full time finding the extra time on top of a full course load is just too difficult. 485 Advisement can be somewhat confusing and uncoordinated. Many times I received conflicting information from semester to semester regarding required courses. 489 shuttle schedules and make animals welcomed on campus 491 More Greek organizations on campus uncover the underground racial tension more diversity in the student body 500 Offer a special education program. activities. 501 Off more classes late in the day and in the evening. 503 I have numerous suggestions beginning with the parking. Commuter students are required to pay for parking which is expensive & security is out of control w/tickets in an economy that is not doing well - have consideration and there is never any parking cause we have to share w/students who live on campus think there are too many dorms being built & focus should be on getting more qualified professors instead of adjuncts in the majors more night classes for law & society students because people do need to work better assistance w/field study & internship placement & better assistance in the bursar's office not very friendly . 513 nothing 526 There should be more representation of the commuter population. 530 The help with financial aid 532 Classes for Education- more fieldwork earlier on 534 laying off adjuncts that have active experience within the profession and hire adjuncts that are totally boring and only have a degree to show 539 I would want the Ramapo College to be more sensitive towards diversity. 541 More diversity More student activities or better promotion of student 127 Working students need these classes. Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 542 Pick day where certain classes move in. Seniors move in on Monday juniors on Tuesday etc. Find work on senior send off a little more. Fix how money is handle in SRAM the rules for that place change every year. It gets hard for club n orgs. To keep up 544 commuter life 553 Helpfulness of office staff. Attitude of security officers- need to be less aggressive and more welcoming/comforting. Registration process needs to be less stressful and more easily navigated. Update website because as of right now it is VERY hard to find information being searched. Get rid of experiential component-- it is often unnecessary and insubstantial/unfulfilling/uneducational!!!!!! 567 food 569 advising students need more help one on one 575 More funding for student on-campus groups and more opportunities for international programs. 583 The offices need to communicate better with each other. While applying to study abroad I felt that I was in the middle of a fight between the Study Abroad office and the Financial Aid office. As a transfer student and a commuter I felt zero support in regards to advisement. 586 more classes open for each semester 590 Not sure 592 Nothing. 593 parking regulations. 599 I did three years of studies at this school and all those the first year was the hardest relating rest to show I saw more and more every semester people of color people like me. I consider this as a pulse and I hope this goes on long after imp gone. 613 no field experience 620 the walk up the hill from the parking lot. 627 The size 631 the cafeterias 634 none of the faculty knows what to do students really need to take care of themselves 128 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 647 Better food and have the atrium opened later 660 Overall the only thing I would change is that I would like Ramapo to have more exciting events on the weekend to keep students interested in staying the weekends. 666 I don't know at this time but of course there is always room for improvement. 677 PUBLIC SAFETY NEEDS TO RELAX 678 Lower the tuition. 686 The non-faculty staff are some of the most incompetent all knowing" people I have ever had to get a headache dealing with. Also its embarrassing bringing people up to Ramapo and having them use our bathrooms. The ones in a through D buildings are disgusting I've been told. Ramapo has a very industrial look to it though that can't be helped but new additions have improved." 689 updating some of the facilities for ex. 690 My educational experience would have been better if there were more tests. I understand that many professors want students to learn in their own way and engage with the material that they find most interesting but unfortunately for many students no tests means no initiative to work. It makes for a very frustrating learning environment when you know because of over heard discussions among classmates that you are the only one doing any work. Furthermore this type of environment does not lend itself to the type of engaged discussion which enables us to fully immerse ourselves in the learning process. 695 Experiential Component. I would also like to see more of a community within Ramapo. 696 more kinds of events. more activities sex and the city again 697 Some staff members could improve their attitude when dealing with student issues. 705 library Nothing. School of Theoretical and Applied Sciences 5 1. The level of the courses - even if it says they are the same level is very different. I took for example a 300 hundred class which was a joke. I don't even know what the book looks like. Then I took another 300 level course which I hardly passed. 2. Professors often change the grading policy. If they say for example in the syllabus that there are two tests and each is 25% of the final grade and 129 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 then half the class fails the first test they drop it. This helps the students who failed of course but totally screws up those who did well on the test. The smart kids shouldn't suffer because the rest of the class is too lazy or too dumb. 3. The office of residence life is extremely disorganized and people there either don't know the answers to questions or are rude and don't tell you. 4. Meal plan shouldn't be mandatory for the dorms without full kitchens. Students can cook in the microwaves and the food will taste better than anything cooked in the Birch. The prices for the meal plans do not correspond to the quality of the food. 17 fire the older teachers in the Biology department because they do not teach 34 The confusion when trying to be advised for what classes to take. 37 I believe that in the secondary education program there should be classes offered on teaching specific content areas Teaching Mathematics Teaching English Teaching Science etc. . . 51 Enthusiasm. 64 Better nursing advisement. 72 More diversity... there is barely any at Ramapo. 76 Size 85 Nursing program needs more structure. 91 organization 92 public safety issuing tickets and security gate protocol 118 Better equipment for science department 137 I didn't expect to be a physics major so I probably shouldn't have gone to Ramapo. Since I did I would expand the physics department to include more advanced classes so that I was better prepared to take the Physics GRE and attend grad school. 153 more food selections 157 Advisement as mine did not help me at all. Being part of the 3 plus 3 program I saw the disorganized manner in which Ramapo communicates with UMDNJ. I had to do all the communication between the two schools plus inform UMDNJ of your new curriculum. I was also unable to take advantage of any of the senior opportunities during my 3rd year which was my last year at Ramapo. I was unable to attend 130 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 graduation as I have 7 finals that week. If you plan on continuing this program you need to figure out how to actually make it work. 164 More stuff to do on the weekends 183 How uptight they are about certain rules that make absolutely no sense 196 Have the Nursing program be more a part of the Ramapo College life. from Ramapo 202 I would include more activities for commuters 208 More school spirit; less favoritism by staff members/public safety towards Greek Life on campus I don't know how many times I've called public safety on my neighbors for very publicly/arrogantly performing illegal activities inside/outside and for them to walk away without a warning; Require that advisors have at least a little bit of experience in the fields/subjects that they're advising 211 The school needs to significantly reevaluate the way it handles administrative duties. Every semester I had an issue with either registration or the bursar's office. Often times their were holds put on my account without my knowledge that were of little significant reason and the staff that was in place was of little assistance in helping me rectify any issues. There was no communication between departments and I found myself walking for hours between financial aid the bursar's office and advisement trying to find a form that they needed signed which had been and was then misplaced. Trying to get paperwork through the SSHS office and the TAS was also a nightmare. On more then one occasion I had to E-Mail the director of a department such as financial aid or threaten to contact the office of the president in order to get anyone to help me solve issues. I have had the opportunity to witness several of my fellows students come to tears because the schools staff refused to help them with an issue and they missed registration for a course. I also know first hand of students who have transferred from Ramapo for this reason and the school is beginning to gain a reputation for this. The hardest part of a school semester should not be administrative work and students should not have to spend days getting accounts settled and registration issues cleared. 214 The Science/Math Professors. 219 The Road Runner cafeteria is too small for the increasing number of students. commuters only. 222 security too strict. Better help in the offices. 230 nothing 241 Better parking and bar on campus. 131 Nursing students feel cut off An additional area for Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 250 The biggest problems I find most students at Ramapo have while going here is dealing with the beaurocratic system of getting things done. Whether choosing classes or getting club allocations for an event a lot of students get frustrated with the confusing process of going from department to department. 251 Freshman and Sophomore housing locations 254 Classes were not too difficult. 259 Security was too strict and the rules for dorm life treated us like children. 268 The judicial affairs and security sector of Ramapo is awful. A student caught with a beer during room inspection is awarded a comparable punishment to a student who is carried away on a stretcher. Frats/sororities/SGA are often allowed to slide on big parties by security. I have been busted by a security guard who weeks before let a frat party I was at slide completely. the frat party was twice as big twice as loud The minimum punishments for alcohol violations are ridiculous. Students who cause a scene or need to be carried away on a stretcher should be punished twice as severely and students who are caught by security at a party where no one is intoxicated should be given lesser punishments. We've created a parachute for recklessness and instead added random pitfalls for anyone who is going to casually consume alcohol. I was caught with alcohol 3 times at Ramapo and was never intoxicated and yet you can imagine how severe my punishments were. These blanket punishments are very very unethical and shouldn't be apart of ANY judicial system. To hand down 15 of the same punishment to everyone in the room would be a laughable act anywhere else in America so why is it good enough at Ramapo? If it means breathalyzing everyone or making even more detailed reports of the scene" then Ramapo should commit to that instead of giving the same punishment to everyone "in the presence of alcohol". I know the rules are the rules but this one is a bullshit one. It allows judicial affairs to say "well you're guilty of being in the presence of alcohol! Sorry our hands are tied". It takes any judgment out of their hands and puts you at their mercy you're completely screwed ALREADY to be blunt This is whether you bought the keg or came in to use the bathroom. Change this rule." 282 I would make the walls and doors thicker in the village so I don't hear so much unnecessary noise. 283 Nothing 287 The social atmosphere. Every other school I have visited was less forceful when it came to fines and underage drinking. 300 Some teachers should not still be teaching and the school has failed to realize that. Most students don't take those teacher evaluations seriously and just want to get them done so they can leave class early. 132 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 316 The ridiculous fines for almost everything 336 The advisement for nursing students 347 Imp not sure incorporate more unique courses 389 The commuter parking 391 Provide more opportunities for students of different background to mix and mingle. 396 some areas where unorganized. and I really would not get into that information. 404 nicer/more competent security guards more competency with Bursars office handling money more relevant courses within the education program that deal with classroom management and teaching within our respective content areas. 421 The nursing program 423 Make it more challenging. Too many of my peers seemingly skated through and were allowed to lead very lazy physically and academically lifestyles. It's because of this that I'm not extremely proud of my alma mater. People treated it as high school 2.0. 426 Make the nursing program one program. Make students at Englewood feel equal and belonging to Ramapo 429 more people stay at school on weekends 450 getting better labs for the science department 455 I would like to have more people in my major. 482 invest in affordable off-campus housing 498 Stronger science programs 502 Less students less crowding staggered scheduling to avoid crowds 517 How many people commute and how many people go home on the weekends. 518 student parking fee should be optional and not to be automatically added to our student bills. most students courses are take online courses and are rarely in campus a whole semester .The fee is too high 133 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 521 Update the outdated science labs. the mid 90's. For a biology major it felt like technology and the labs were from 533 Security response 547 The Food 550 The education provided by Ramapo College was not rigorous enough. That is what I would change about this college. 557 Classes need to be made available at more than one time block because many classes that are needed overlap. If summer classes are going to be canceled maybe instead you could offer them online. 561 none 562 communication with professors 565 Presently I cannot think of any changes needed 568 The nursing advisor 573 Parking policies 574 The one program" idea btw Englewood and the Ramapo students-I feel like this just made the school's faculty feel better but not the students." 614 Accountability of Nursing Faculty 625 Certain professors at the college were useless. They had no lesson plans and would give unwarranted grades. Bitter souls that made it apparent to me that they didn't even like their jobs and were quick to pass judgment whether it was in my favor or not. 630 The nursing program- combine Valley and Englewood or at least have the two parts communicate more. 635 Parking was tough as a commuter sometimes. Also during inclement weather events classes aren't cancelled until last minute which is also hard. 642 In general Ramapo is still an Environmental Science college with a few other options for majors; look at the core courses which are all Env Science and have instructors who are barely qualified to tie their shoes. Bill paying parking permits administrative fees advisement planning a schedule in advance and the adult" learning program all need to be addressed. In this economy you are probably still turning away students and feel that this means you are running a quality institution. There is 134 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2009: Appendix B-2 a lot of room for improvement so the talented instructors and professors can shine the way they should. " 652 library inapp. study environment 1. temperature: so cold in the winter time and librarian 3. not safe place esp at the night time 668 Nothing 679 The amount of biology courses offered is pretty low. Microbiology wasn't even offered until after I graduate. Also some teachers were really great but a few were terrible. The school should take the student evaluations more seriously because people are truthful with those. 682 Attitude of workers in offices 684 Public Safety 694 Increase student awareness about different programs offered in the school such as TAS-journal club research programs with different professors to name a few. 698 too much blaming of white people for all the problems in the world 712 1 Student parking should not be used by residential students. There should be separate parking areas for housing at the south end of the campus behind their buildings as they currently take up to 25% of the parking needed by commuters. 2 Mature" commuter students who have difficulty with both the distance from the student parking area and the "hill" you have to climb in order to get to the academic buildings but don't qualify or their physicians won't authorized for a handicap license should be granted parking privileges after a screening by student health which don't cause as much physical difficulties for them. 3 There need to be more benches along the walkways from the student parking lots and up the "hills" to the academic buildings. There is only 1 bench for each of the two walkways up the "hills" on either side of the Berrie Center. It's not enough." 135 2. very noisy students Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Untitled Page 1 of 1 PART A: ACADEMICS AND CAMPUS CLIMATE To what extent do you agree or disagree with the following statements?
