Longitudinal Comparisons Four (4) year comparisons: 4 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2012 - Highlights Quantifiable items from Graduating Senior Survey 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 are presented in tables and graphs in the Longitudinal Comparisons section of this report. In the tables, students’ responses this year are compared with previous 3-year averages and last year’s responses. A brief summary is presented below. This year, the same as the previous 3 years, a large majority of students (90% and higher) are satisfied in the following areas: I felt safe while on campus 96.5% People from different racial/ethnic groups got along well 93.3% The courses in my major were rigorous and demanded a high level of effort 91.7% I received high quality instruction in all or most courses 91.5% I learned a lot in all or most of my courses 90.4% However, compared with previous 3-year averages, fewer students gave positive responses this year to the statement “I will recommend Ramapo to other potential students” (2012: 79.4% - 3-year average: 86.8% = -7.4%). This -7.4% difference is statistically significant at p<.001 level with a moderate effect size at -0.21. Please see the table in the Longitudinal Comparisons section for item by item comparisons on Part A: Academics and Campus Climate. Students’ participation in career development and experiential learning this year are compared with participations in the previous 3 years. Activities arranged by Cahill Center and by School/Faculty are presented in tables and graphs in the Longitudinal Comparisons section of this report. Students’ self-reported participation of activities (regardless how the activities are arranged) has been relatively high (40% and higher) over the past 4 years in the following areas (listed in descending order of 2012 participation rate): Internship (2009: 53.3%, 2010: 54.1%, 2011: 58.8%, and 2012: 60.1%) Community service (2009: 45.6%, 2010: 50.9%, 2011: 49.0%, and 2012: 47.3%) Cooperative education (2009: 40.4%, 2010: 39.6%, 2011: 42.0%, and 2012: 42.5%) Field work experience (2009: 42.9%, 2010: 43.4%, 2011: 45.4%, and 2012: 42.0%) Among all the activities, self-reported participation in internship has been steadily increasing over the past 4 years (2009: 53.3%, 2010: 54.1%, 2011: 58.8%, 2012: 60.1%) with a 4.7% increase this year over the previous 3-year average. Students’ self-reported participation in graduate school advice has also been steadily increasing over the past 4 years (2009: 31.7%, 2010: 32.7%, 2011: 35.3%, 2012: 35.8%) with a 2.6% increase this year over the previous 3-year average. However, students reported less participation in some activities this year compared with last year: Faculty research project/paper (2012: 29.8% - 2011: 34.1% = -4.3%) 5 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2012 - Highlights Attended a lecture/event with international focus Field work experience International cooperative education Student teaching (2012: 34.6% - 2011: 38.2% = -3.6%) (2012: 42.0% - 2011: 45.4% = -3.3%) (2012: 18.0% - 2011: 21.2% = -3.3%) (2012: 24.1% - 2011: 27.2% = -3.2%) Regarding plans for next year, 5.0% more students will ‘enter the workforce immediately’ this year than last year. Among those who will ‘enter workforce immediately’, 2.3% more students will have full-time jobs this year. Among those who will be working fulltime, 4.8% more have jobs recently obtained this year compared with last year. At the time of the survey, fewer students (-3.9%) plan to continue education this year compared with last year. However, among those who will continue with education, 7.3% more students were accepted by graduate schools this year compared with last year. The acceptance rate this year was also 3.8% higher than the previous 3-year average. Satisfaction with employment preparation is 3.9% higher than last year, and .07% higher than the previous 3-year average. Satisfaction with graduate school preparation this year is -3.7% lower than last year, and -3.7% lower than the previous 3-year average. Five (5) year and Ten (10) year comparisons: Eleven (11) items between the current survey and a previous version are comparable. Responses from the past 5 years and the past 10 years are presented in tables and graphs in the Longitudinal Comparisons section of the report. Comparison of this year’s responses with previous 4-year and previous 9-year averages are included in the tables. A highlight of these comparisons is as follows. Compared with previous 4-year averages, students have higher level of satisfaction in the following item: Ramapo /my major prepared me well for employment (2012: 79.5% - 4-year average: 77.2% = 2.3%) Compared with previous 9-year averages, most items show greater satisfaction. Areas with higher level of satisfaction now than previous 9-year averages include (largest increase listed first): Ramapo /my major prepared me well for employment (2012: 79.5% - 9-year average: 73.4% = 6.1%) Most students were serious about learning (2012: 78.0% - 9-year average: 72.7% = 5.3%) Ramapo /my major prepared me well for graduate school (2012: 81.9% - 9-year average: 78.6% = 3.3%) 6 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2012 - Highlights Students’ responses this year are less positive to the following statements compared with previous 4-year and 9-year averages: I will recommend Ramapo to other potential students (2012: 79.4%, 4-year average: 85.4%, 9-year average: 86.4%). I grew as a person culturally, socially, & ethically (2012: 89.8%, 4-year average: 92.6%, 9-year average: 92.2%). Survey Response Rate and Representativeness The response rate for the Graduating Senior Survey 2012 is 48.4%. A comparison of the 685 survey respondents with the 1415 survey population show that respondents represent the survey population well on students’ age, ethnicity, and the schools to which they belong. However, proportionally more responses were from female students, and students with higher GPA’s. 7 Academic Assessment /Office of the Provost Graduating Senior Survey 2012 Part A: Academics and
