A-1 2013 CIRP Freshman Survey Instrument………………………………………………………5 pages ii CIRP 2013 Highlights Ramapo enrolled 901 freshmen in fall 2013, of whom 52 percent were Female; 66 percent cited their race/ethnicity as White, Non-Hispanic; and 72 percent were age 18 or less. 72 percent of the incoming freshmen responded to the CIRP survey. Among them 52 percent were female; 75 percent indicated their ethnicity as White/Caucasian; and 75 percent were 18 years or younger. 57 percent of the respondents resided anywhere between 11-50 miles from campus. Almost 94 percent of the respondents cited English as their Native language. Roughly one-third (over 33 percent) of the respondents indicated that their parents (father or mother) had a high school diploma or less. Almost 55 percent of those who completed the survey spent anywhere between 1 to 5 hours per week studying while in high school. Approximately 45 percent of the respondents spent 2 hours or less on pleasure reading. Over 75 percent of the respondents used Internet for research and homework during their tenure in high-school, while 73 percent socialized with different ethnic groups while in high school. Over 20 percent of the respondents worked for pay while they were in high school. Ramapo was the first college choice for almost 63 percent of the respondents. Over 75 percent of the respondents planned to live on campus during the fall 2013 term. 70 percent of the respondents indicated that they will complete their studies at Ramapo. Almost two-thirds (67 percent) of the respondents chose Ramapo for its academic reputation, while almost 58 percent chose it for its low tuition. The primary reason to attend college (91 percent) was to get a better job. Over 60 percent expressed concerns about their ability to finance their college education. Almost 45 percent of the respondents plan to earn a master’s degree and another 23 percent plan to earn a doctorate or a professional degree eventually. Almost half of those who responded to the survey intend to get a job to help pay for college costs. Being financially well-off (84 percent) and raising a family (78 percent) were the two top personal goals for the survey respondents. 26 percent of the respondents indicated to have liberal political orientation; while 19 percent had a conservative orientation.
