Welcome to Pathology Update 2016 – A Diamond Date
On behalf of the College Council, Pathology Update 2016 Overseeing Committee and the eight Scientific Program
Committees, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the Melbourne Convention Centre for A Diamond Date.
Pathology Update 2016 has nine extraordinary international speakers who are leaders in their fields and a contingent
of over 140 local Australasian speakers. We have brought you the best.
We would like to thank our international and local speakers for the time and effort involved in preparing their
presentations. We also thank the Chairs and Members of the Scientific Program committees who have worked long
and hard to develop the scientific programs. As always, we have striven to provide something for everyone. Pathology
Update is the only Australasian multi-disciplinary pathology scientific meeting and as a delegate you can attend any
scientific stream.
As well as enjoying the scientific sessions, please make the most of this opportunity to meet with colleagues and share
areas of interest. We invite all to attend our Welcome Cocktail Party on the Friday evening and also hope you will join
us on Saturday evening at the Pathology Update 2016 Conference Dinner where we celebrate the College turning 60!
A special thank you to all our Sponsors and Exhibitors, and we gratefully acknowledge the valuable contribution from
the Major and Supporting Partners. We warmly welcome those who are with us for the first time and a very sincere
thank you to all those who continue to support us year after year by their presence and financial contribution to this
conference.
This meeting could not take place without continued financial support and we ask you to acknowledge the invaluable
input of the sponsors and exhibitors by visiting each of the exhibition booths during your time at the conference.
Education is the prime function of the College and this ceremony marks the culmination of years of training for both
the new pathologists, scientists and their mentors. We would encourage as many Fellows as possible to attend the
DS Nelson and QAP Oral Presentations at 5.00pm on Friday 26 February 2016 and the RCPA Annual Admission and
Awards Ceremony for the presentation of their Fellowship on Saturday 26 February 2016.
At the conclusion of the Ceremony will be the Pathology Update 2016 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner and we encourage
all delegates and your guests to attend the celebration. We look forward to seeing you at Pathology Update 2016

Pathology Update 2016 Pre Conference Workshop
Introduction to the Mortuary and the Autopsy
Thursday 25 February 2016: 8.00am - 5.00pm
Location: Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine
This workshop will take place in the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, 57 – 83 Kavanagh Street, Southbank, Victoria which
is approximately a 20 minute walk from the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The Introduction to the Mortuary and the Autopsy course has returned. It will be held at the Victorian Institute of Forensic
Medicine (VIFM) on Thursday 25th February 2016 (preceding Pathology Update at the Melbourne Convention Centre). This one
day course is suitable for new anatomical pathology, general pathology and forensic pathology trainees. Emphasis will be on
basic principles of the post-mortem examination in the hospital (non-Coronial) environment and lectures will include the perinatal
autopsy. The day will incorporate direct observation of an autopsy with teaching by the course organisers. The course will also
include principles of how to approach viva examinations of post-mortem macroscopic specimens (‘museum pots’) and the
opportunity to practice in a small group. Participation is limited to 30 registrants.
