2012 Transferable Courses COMMON COURSE NUMBERING Washington State Community Colleges have implemented a common course numbering (CCN) system. "Common" courses are designated by the "&" symbol at the end of the department abbreviation, as in BIOL& instead of BIOL. This guide includes only commonly numbered courses. Other courses not listed here may also transfer to Puget Sound. For further guidance, you should be sure to review your community college's individual section in this transfer manual. Transfer evaluations are completed in the context of each student's academic program. It is possible for an evaluation to exclude courses that are listed in this guide. Therefore students are encouraged to contact the Puget Sound Office of Admission in selecting transfer courses, especially those students who have selected a major. A maximum of 96 quarter credits may be transferred, and all courses are evaluated on a course-by-course basis. Students should use the course listing in conjunction with the current course catalog at their community college and the University of Puget Sound Bulletin 2011-2012. This guide is effective for the 2012 calendar year only and will be honored until 2014. language proficiency requirement with transfer credit while junior transfer students may complete 5 Core courses and the foreign language proficiency requirement with transfer credit. HUMANISTIC APPROACHES (5 credits) ANTH& 206 - Cultural Anthropology ENGL& 220 - Intro to Shakespeare ENGL& 224 - Shakespeare 1 Transfer credit used in a major or minor program is subject to ENGL& 225 - Shakespeare 2 departmental review. Academic departments may require a HIST& 116 - Western Civilization I transfer student to complete an interview or examination before HIST& 117 - Western Civilization II being placed into a program of study. Based on a student's HIST& 118 - Western Civilization III placement, transfer credit may be adjusted and a student HIST& 126 - World Civilizations I required to complete appropriate courses in residence. HIST& 127 - World Civilizations II HIST& 128 - World Civilizations III NOTE: These listings apply to regular course offerings HIST& 136 - US History 1 completed by regular college students. Courses offered in HIST& 137 - US History 2 other formats, such as programmed-learning, challenge HIST& 146 - US History I examinations, distance-learning, online, or telecourses, may HIST& 147 - US History II HIST& 148 - US History III not be transferable. Additionally, college credit earned prior to high school graduation is subject to evaluation using both HIST& 156 - History of US I the high school and college transcripts. HIST& 157 - History of US II HIST& 158 - History of US III Because curriculum revisions may occur during the year, all HIST& 159 - History of US IV announcements are subject to change without notice. This HIST& 220 - African American History document does not create a contract between the university HUM& 117 - Humanities II and any student or community college. PHIL& 101 - Intro to Philosophy This guide has two lists, one for CCN courses that transfer as university Core requirements and one for transferable/nontransferable CCN courses in general. Note any courses that must be taken in combination in order to transfer as equivalent to a course(s) at Puget Sound. If the combination is not completed, separate courses may not transfer. Students are therefore advised to complete a sequence of courses, rather than just one or two quarters (for example, students studying Biology should complete BIOL& 211, 212, and 213 rather than just BIOL& 211 and 212). Students with transfer credit questions should contact the Office of Admission at 253.879.3211or 800.396.7191. 2012 Advising Manual University of Puget Sound / Common Course Numbering TRANSFERABLE COURSES THAT COMPLETE UNIVERSITY CORE REQUIREMENTS FINE ARTS APPROACHES (5 credits) DRMA&101 - Intro to Theatre ENGL& 111 - Intro to Literature ENGL& 112 - Intro to Fiction The university Core Curriculum includes 8 requirements plus ENGL& 113 - Intro to Poetry a foreign language proficiency requirement.
