Utilizing lectures, workshops, and interactive programs, students master skills in communication, conflict resolution, decision-making, goal setting, problem solving, and etiquette. Students are given a detailed account of Prairie View A&M University’s history and traditions. They are encouraged to develop a stronger connection to the University and the riches stored on these hollowed grounds. Students take advantage of this intense leadership development experience to define leadership perspective and enhance their college experience. Throughout the Institute, students are challenged personally to engage in various self-discovery activities, relationship building, and the development of life skills. The following Learning Outcomes are used to assess the effectiveness of the Student Leadership Institute: Students will: o Define and develop their personal leadership styles o Integrate moral and ethical values into personal leadership styles o Understand and communicate the University’s history, ideals and, traditions file:///C|/Users/psmith/Desktop/4.4%20i%20Student%20Leadership%20Institute.htm[8/8/2013 11:11:38 AM] Student Leadership Institute o Demonstrate the ability to work effectively in team settings and other collaborative efforts o Facilitate group activities and discussions To participate in the Student Leadership Institute, a student MUST meet the following requirements: o 2.5 Cumulative GPA o Completed 25 credit hours o In good standing with the University o Submit a completed application (Download Application Here) Requires Adobe Reader 9.4 or higher o Pay commitment fee (Pay Online via Panthers Marketplace) Applications are made available at the end of each spring semester and may be obtained from the Student Activities and Leadership website under “forms”: www.pvamu.edu/studentactivities After successfully completing the Institute, students graduate into the Panther Advisor Leaders (PALS) organization. As a PAL, a student is able to utilize the various leadership elements from the Institute to aid the University in recruitment and retention efforts, incorporate team-building concepts in their program planning, and affect the academic and social awareness of fellow students through peer mentoring.
