LIBERAL ARTS CORE DIRECTOR Position Announcement (Internal Search Only) Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost for Academic Affairs University of Northern Iowa The University of Northern Iowa is currently accepting internal applications for a three-year renewable term appointment as the Liberal Arts Core (LAC) Director. In addition to his/her regular faculty salary, s/he will be provided a $3000 annual stipend and 2/9 of his/her salary for two months of summer work, along with a reduced teaching load during the regular school year. Start date of this appointment will be January 10, 2011. Position Description The Liberal Arts Core (LAC) Director will have a range of responsibilities related to the planning and evaluation of all aspects of a high-quality and strong LAC. S/he will be responsible for providing leadership, vision, and advocacy for the LAC. S/he will advise the Executive Vice President and Provost, Associate Provost for Academic Affairs, Deans, and others, as appropriate, about resource allocations, strategic planning and implementation, and university vision on matters related to the LAC. The LAC Director will serve as the representative of the Executive Vice President and Provost office on both the LAC Committee and the LAC Review Steering Committee. Specifically, primary responsibilities as Liberal Arts Core Director include: Providing leadership for developing and achieving critical new initiatives in the LAC Promoting the value and role of the LAC as the foundation of a university education to various stakeholders both within and outside the larger university community Serving as Chair of the LAC committee, with responsibility for scheduling meetings, setting agendas, and documenting LAC committee activities Collecting and reporting on assessment of the LAC – including overall program quality indicators, student outcomes, and category reviews – working collaboratively with Institutional Research, the Office of Academic Assessment, and designated LAC review committees Serving as a liaison to the Faculty Senate and other groups for matters related to the LAC Required Qualifications o Earned doctorate (or terminal degree) in an academic discipline from an accredited institution o Tenured faculty member o Demonstrated commitment to high quality teaching and learning in the LAC o Extensive experience teaching in the LAC o Outstanding communication skills (oral, written, and listening) o Demonstrated skills in planning or organizing o Considerable experience with college/university curricula, policies and procedures, and program assessment Preferred Qualifications o o o o o o Evidence of excellence in scholarly achievement Substantial record of successful academic service Knowledge of academic support services Awareness of current trends in higher education Ability to handle sensitive situations and information with discretion Evidence of successful collaboration and interdisciplinary work Application All applications received by November 18, 2010 will receive full consideration.
