Makarius Victor Mdemu has above 5 years of research experiences in the range of
agricultural and river basin water resources management, rainwater harvesting and
management, land ecosystem management, and assessment of soil-water-plantatmosphere continuum in semi-arid tropics. He has participated in water resources
management research projects involving local communities, local government and
international institutions in the Greater Ruaha River Basin in Tanzania and Glowa Volta
Basin in Ghana. He is also experienced in quantitative and qualitative data handling
techniques, conceptual analytical skills, use of sophisticated computer-based data
management systems, computer programming (e.g., Turbo Pascal, Fortran), application of
Agro-hydrological models (e.g., CROPWAT, SWAP, SWAT, MODFLOW), Remote sensing
& GIS tools (e.g., ArcView GIS, ARCMAP, IDRISS, GPS Systems) and Social sciences
statistical packages. He has also research interests on: soil water management, agrohydrological modeling, remote sensing and GIS for management of agricultural water
resources, application of physical water accounting to construct economic water accounts,
agricultural water use adaptation to climate changes, environmental flows and allocation,
transport of agricultural contaminants into water bodies.

Water Management Specialist, Mid-Term Review of WWF integrated water
resource management programme for the Great Ruaha River Catchment
Area, Tanzania
ZEF: Conduct research in water productivity in semi-arid areas of the Volta
Basin and contribute to the database required for the DSS for assessment,
sustainable use and development of water resources in the Volta Basin
being developed under the GLOWA Volta Project.
Principal Investigator, Water productivity of reservoir irrigated schemes in
the Upper East Region of Ghana. Implemented in collaboration with the
Savanna Agricultural Research Institute (SARI), Tamale, Ghana. Research
Grant by International Foundation for Science (IFS).
RIPARWIN-SUA(TZ)/UEA-DEV(UK)/IWMI(SA): Carryout research on water
productivity and irrigation efficiency in large and smallholder irrigation
schemes in Usangu plains in the Greater Ruaha River Basin with the aim of
developing strategies to improve irrigation water resources management
and intersectoral water allocation.
RIPARWIN: Organizing training workshops on irrigation efficiency and
water productivity for technical irrigation professionals in Tanzania.
Contributed to the development of a proposal for the inclusion of the
Greater Ruaha River Basin in the UNESCO-HELP Basins Network
Program.
SWMRG: Modeling of crop water productivity for irrigated and rainfed crops
in the Mkoji sub-catchment in the Ruaha River Basin. Contribution to the
FAO Project: opportunities for enhancing the productivity of water in crop
production in the Mkoji Sub-catchment for rainfed and irrigated farming
