If your class attended the Global Poverty Project presentation of 1.4 Billion Reasons this week, you may now be exploring options to keep them engaged with the topic from and academic perspective. Many ideas are sparking - many of which are posted on the WCU Poverty Project website. The Gadfly An opportunity for you to encourage your students toward scholarly writing and publication as they continue to process the amazing presentation by Hugh Evans last week … this note is shared by Emily Elders, student and WCY Poverty Project Steering committee member. “This year the Gadfly is focusing on wealth disparity as its theme. We are considering running two issues, one in fall and one in spring. “ --- Learn more about the WCU class of 2015 Courtesy of Philip Cauley, Director of Admissions Visit this link for the Freshman Profile of 2011 PERSPECTIVES More to ponder from the Listserv community……….. A PBS Frontline documentary, Merchants of Cool, looks at consumerism among our youth. (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/cool) shows how teenagers are manipulated by corporate America with regard to clothing, music, etc. “…A colleague showed it to his first year liberal arts colloquium students and said they found it rather disturbing - perhaps it was like holding up a mirror and the students looking in the mirror and not liking what they see (or, maybe they were unable to admit that they were being manipulated). A documentary like this might not make students happy, per se, but it could be useful for stimulating critical discussions about what we value and why, which is certainly related to happiness.” Dr. Charles E. Booth, Eastern Connecticut State University TOOLBOX Engaging Students beyond PowerPoint This week's teaching idea is courtesy of Patrick Fredricks, Graduate Assistant for Leadership in the Office of Leadership and Student Involvement. As millennials start college, their knowledge of technology can sometimes overwhelm staff and faculty members. This presents a challenge of engaging students beyond the traditional lecture and PowerPoint presentations. Luckily there are several different activities that can be incorporated into the classroom that educates the students and engages them as the same time! Team Building Activities for the Digital Age is a great resource for unique and creative ideas that utilize the technology that students are already using their cell phones, Facebook, MP3 players, digital cameras, etc. Below is the link to the main website with 5 different examples and the Facebook group that provides a few more ideas. The websites are associated with the book Team Building Activities for the Digital Age which can be purchased. If you prefer not to buy the book, Patrick Fredricks, the Graduate Assistant for Leadership in The Office of Leadership and Student Involvement does have a copy. If you would like to borrow the book, please contact Patrick at ptfredricks@wcu.edu. http://www.teambuildingfordigitals.com/ http://www.facebook.com/TeamBuildingActivities Poll Everywhere is an excellent resource that allows instructors to gain feedback from their audience through the use of text messaging. Instead of putting their phones away in class, students actually get to use their phone during class! The instructor can create multiple choice or short answer questions and the students can respond with live results. It can also be incorporated into a PowerPoint presentation! It is free for audiences 30 or less (smaller classes) but there is a cost associated with larger audiences. If you are looking for innovative ways to introduce your students to the topic of academic integrity, you may find this tutorial useful. Students choose an avatar and it walks them through the consequences based on choices made.
