B Y: N IC O L E BA S K IN S E PT E M B ER 2 3, 20 1 3 MESSAGE 1 Diversity Month: Students with Disabilities Disability means to lack the capacity to perform normal tasks due to impairment. It may sound like an accurate definition, but is it really? People who are impaired do struggle with certain things, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they can’t do it. It just means they do it in a different way. For example, for those who are blind, sure they can’t see visually, but they can see physically. Meaning, they use their hands to read and recognize objects. Some of us are great at understanding English compared to math equations or those who are athletic may be better using speed compared to having maximum muscle control. Think of those who are impaired the same way. Do you have a documented impairment? Be sure to inform your professors and seek help when needed. Check out WCU’s Disabilities home page to learn about different services available! Although someone with a disability may have trouble fitting into society, many have contributed greatly to society. Sir Richard Branson, a well-known entrepreneur has dyslexia, Tiger Woods struggles with a speech impairment, and MANY actors and singers have shared their personal stories about living with a disability. Remember everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and we shouldn’t look at those who have disabilities any differently. MESSAGE 2 Cubs Corner! Your Journey – Your Goals! HEY CUBS! Explore—Discover—Make Memories Country Side Bowling Lanes By: Nicholas Redmond On Sunday, I went bowling at Country Side Lanes with three friends. Country Side Lanes is conveniently located in Sylva, NC and it is just a fifteen-minute car ride from campus. Their hours of operation are Monday-Tuesday 10:00a.m.-11:00p.m., Wednesday 10:00a.m.-11:00p.m., Thursday 11:00a.m.-11:00p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:00a.m.-1:00 a.m., and Sunday 4:00p.m.-10:00p.m. The bowling alley has many good qualities including the price to bowl, the speedy and exemplary service, and the condition of the lanes. Despite the alley’s good qualities, there are a few drawbacks. These drawbacks include the overall lighting both inside and outside the building, the confusing computers, and the seemingly unsteady and fragile plastic ball return. Overall, my experience at Country Side Lanes was good, mainly because it was a nice place to have a fun time bowling with my friends. The qualities of Country Side Lanes greatly outnumber the drawbacks. The first one of these qualities that I noticed was the convenience of the bowling alley’s location. The alley is only a fifteen-minute drive from campus. Another plus of the bowling alley are the prices of bowling offered. On Sundays they offer unlimited bowling from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. for only $9.50. Monday through Friday, it costs only $1.50 per game plus a $2.00 shoe rental. Most other bowling alleys cost at least fifteen dollars to bowl for an hour. This bowling experience held its value far better than any other alley that I have been to. Another feature of Countryside Lanes I noticed is the speed and quality of the service. Even though there were only two people on staff while I was there, every time we had an issue they quickly and efficiently assisted us. Another thing that I noticed about the bowling alley was the quality of the lanes. Many bowling alleys’ lanes are scratched. However, the lanes at Country Side Lanes have no scratches are oiled nicely. In the case of the good qualities of Country Side Lanes, it definitely stands out from other places. Despite the numerous pros of Country Side Lanes, there are a few downsides. For starters, the alley was poorly lit. The parking lot, for example, had only a few lights; this gave the parking lot a very ominous aura. Also, the sign for the bowling alley was flickering. The inside was only partially lit. The overall lighting of Country Side Lanes made it look uninviting. Another drawback to this bowling alley is that it is not clear how the computers are to be operated so they can get confusing. The last drawback to Country Side Lanes was that the ball return was made of seemingly cheap plastic that felt very fragile and unsteady. This made me feel like the balls were going to break the ball return and fall all over the ground. Country Side Lanes is a great place to have a good time bowling with friends and family because the lanes are nice, the service is great, it is in a convenient location and it is a very cheap and fun experience. This bowling alley is great overall. There are, however, lighting and hardware issues that should be fixed in order for Country Side Lanes to be a first rate bowling alley. They have the quality of service, the price and the lane quality going for them. I am certain that I will return there in the future and encourage everyone to go there.
