Howtoprepareforthereworkofyourcomputer
Having your computer reworked is necessary at times to resolve issues, improve performance, or upgrade your operating system, but the thought of losing access to all of your information can be a little scary. The WCU Division of IT (DoIT) is here to help. Please use this checklist to prepare for the rework of your computer and if necessary, the migration of your professional data. 1)ConsolidateData
Save your local data in the My Documents (or Documents) folder: Doing so will make it much easier to locate your important data when it is time to repair or upgrade your system. This data should include documents from applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher and Adobe Reader (.doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx, .mdb, .accdb, .pub, .pdf) but also files that are often overlooked (Favorites, Bookmarks, archived email, desktop items and orphan documents). The WCU Division of IT will attempt to migrate any uncorrupted data stored in the My Documents (or Documents) folder from the computer and restore it to your computer after the rework. Although the DoIT offers this assistance, the data is unrecoverable in certain instances. You are responsible for maintaining a backup of any essential data stored on your computer. 2)BackUpData
You are responsible for maintaining a backup copy of any nonā€standard software products (license permitting), applications, and data files. IT recommends that faculty and staff regularly save data on their H: drive located on the Mercury server. The data on the hard drive of a computer is not backed up by the DoIT. Data stored on the network (H: \\mercury\share) is backed up by the DoIT. More information on data stewardship and responsibility can be found in this web page: http://www.wcu.edu/chancellor/index/UniversityPolicy/Policy97.htm Tutorials on how to backup your data are available via iTunes University: http://itunes.wcu.edu/ Under Training and Support Services you will find backup instructions for Windows 7, XP, Vista and Mac OS X. 3)ListandCollectSoftwareNeeded
All newly imaged WCU computers include standard programs including Microsoft Office Suite, Symantec AntiVirus, Internet browsers, Adobe Acrobat Reader, common media players and access to WCU systems. List and locate installation media (if necessary) of any additional software that you use regularly. Software on your current computer cannot be moved from your old computer. This software must be reinstalled. The DoIT will follow up with you and can assist with additional basic software installations. 5)AftertheRework
After your computer is reworked, we will need you to login with your AD account. We will configure your email and install the printer(s). We will follow up with you after setup to offer any additional assistance needed. The file(s) containing any migrated data will be saved in a secure location for five business days. If you discover that some data was not transferred to your new workstation, please contact the IT Help Desk within that time. After one week, the data will be removed. The file will be password protected with a password you select. You will be asked to create the password for the file, and it is your responsibility to retain the password you choose. If you lose the password, your data will be unrecoverable. The WCU Division of IT will take reasonable and appropriate care of University Faculty, Staff, and Student computers while they are under our care. It is solely the responsibility of the customer to backup any data that is on the computer BEFORE the data migration. The WCU Division of IT is not responsible for loss of data, software programs, or any other information that may be on the computer. WCU Division of IT is not responsible if at any time the information on the hard disk or other digital media are altered, deleted, or in any way modified.
