To: Faculty, College of Education and Allied Professions and College of Arts and Sciences From: Rus Binkley, School of Teaching & Learning Pam Buskey, School of Teaching & Learning John Habel, Department of Psychology Date: November 2, 2015 RE: Rural-Urban Exchange We invite interested and qualified students who are juniors and seniors and not yet in Internship II or full-time student teaching to participate in the Rural-Urban Exchange (RUE) involving the College of Education and Allied Professions at WCU and our partner School of Education at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (NCA&T) in Greensboro. The RUE is available to all teacher-education students, including secondary education majors; BK, elementary and middle grades majors; and majors in K-12 programs such as Inclusive education, PE, art, music, and foreign languages. We will select six students to participate. WCU students will visit NCA&T for the week of March 14 – March 18, 2016. During this week the students will live on the NCA&T campus, spend time in local schools, and in campus and community activities designed to help them to work with diverse P-12 students. NCA&T students will spend the week of March 28 – April 1, 2016 at WCU and visit local schools including the Cherokee Central Schools to gain experience with P-12 schools and students in a rural setting. Rural-Urban Exchange Program goals include: 1. To provide substantial field experience in urban communities with P-12 students from diverse ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, and language groups to WCU students. 2. To provide NCA&T students with significant field experience in rural communities with P12 students. 3. To furnish participating students the opportunity to work with university and public school faculty who will provide valuable skills and preparation for working with diverse P-12 students.
