At the University of Saskatchewan, our ambitions are matched only by our determination. From the day the people of Saskatchewan came together in 1907 and put the first building on campus in the middle of an open prairie field, we have always dreamed of a better tomorrow—and we are not afraid of the work it takes to make it happen. We have come a long way since those first days, but our ambition and our drive have never slowed. We have educated a prime minister of Canada and multiple premiers, including Saskatchewan’s current leader. A Nobel Prize winner has walked our halls, along with an Academy Award winner, Rhodes Scholars and Olympic medalists. Every year, we welcome nearly 30,000 students, faculty and staff to campus who just might be next—the next great novelist, the next leader of Canada or the next person with a scientific breakthrough to fight a disease the world has been battling for generations. We believe in the potential of our faculty and students, and of our university. It is our time to take the next step towards fulfilling that potential. We want a president and vice-chancellor who has a clear vision of where our university is headed, and can help us get there. The person we choose as our next leader will have the responsibility and the privilege to work with and lead people from across campus, throughout the province and around the world to move the University of Saskatchewan forward. Greg Smith Chair, U of S Board of Governors 3 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR OUR UNIVERSITY The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) is a major research-intensive university and a member of the U15, the top research universities in Canada. The U of S was originally home to two colleges: agriculture, and arts and science. These colleges continue to play an important role. We are well known globally for our expertise in agriculture and bioresources, and the College of Arts and Science is home to more of our students than any other college. Since our early days, the campus has grown and evolved to also include a full range of health science and professional colleges, and a cluster of world-class research facilities, including the Canadian Light Source, VIDO-InterVac, the Global Institute for Food Security and the Global Institute for Water Security. Due in part to the high quality of research infrastructure, we have six areas of special focus: Aboriginal Peoples, agriculture, energy and mineral resources, animal and human health, synchrotron science and water security. In these signature areas of study, and many others, we have attracted a host of pre-eminent faculty and researchers. In addition to having the opportunity to work and study at one of Canada’s top research universities, our students, faculty, researchers and staff enjoy a high level of support typical of a smaller university, creating an environment that inspires collaboration, innovation and discovery. Our students have the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience in their field of study, whether by taking part in an internship or co-op program, participating in a field class, or by taking advantage of a study abroad or exchange program at another Canadian or international institution. Our population of international students and self-declared Aboriginal students is growing. Our diverse community of students, staff and faculty creates an environment where all can feel welcome, and a culture of learning, growth and deeper understanding that extends beyond the classroom. In the spirit of Treaty Six, in whose territory the University of Saskatchewan is located, our vision is to be recognized as a place where many peoples come together to engage in mutually respectful relations and dialogues. After students’ time on campus is complete, they join an illustrious group of over 143,000 alumni who are spread across the globe. Our graduates are known for their work ethic, resourceful nature and determination, and will continue to build on our history of success to address the world’s challenges now and in the future. 4 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR OUR CAMPUS The beauty of our campus is undeniable. Often discussed as one of the most beautiful in Canada, our main campus is home to a Canadian National Historic Site, seven museums, an observatory, a sculpture garden, walking paths along the river, and, in the heart of it all, the Bowl, a green space where people gather to socialize, study, rest and exercise. The past decade has seen considerable development on campus, including the Health Sciences building, where students from a number of disciplines can learn, study and research together, new residence buildings and a significant renovation of the Place Riel Student Centre. All of these new spaces give even more life to our campus. Plays, musical performances, sports—there are plenty of activities that bring our community together. For students and faculty that join us from around the world, our campus becomes home; where they live, work and play. 5 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR OUR ADVANTAGE While we have much in common with other universities, there are also things that set us apart, and we are proud to stand out from the others. Here are just a few things that give us our edge. WE ARE PROUD OF OUR HISTORY. From our humble beginnings as one historic building in a prairie field shortly after Saskatchewan became a province, we have created one of the most beautiful campuses in Canada through our more than 100-year history, flourishing along with the province itself. WE HAVE PEOPLE WHO NEVER CEASE TO AMAZE US. Our staff and faculty are doing some incredible things. Over 7,500 people work, teach and conduct research at the U of S, and the work they are doing makes headlines. From developing medical isotopes to exploring the artistic side of surgery, there is always a new story to tell. WE GIVE OUR EXPERTS THE PROPER TOOLS. Canada’s only synchrotron, the Canadian Light Source, sits on our campus, as well as VIDO-InterVac, a world leader in developing vaccines and technologies that fight infectious diseases. We also have the Global Institute for Water Security that is home to a Canada Excellence Research Chair, the Global Institute for Food Security and a world-class Toxicology Centre. 6 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR WE KNOW OUR NAME IS SO MUCH MORE THAN A NAME. We are not just the University of Saskatchewan; we are a university for Saskatchewan. We recognize the value of being able to call our province home. We work with people across Saskatchewan through our University Senate, and our president has the opportunity to directly interact with communities throughout Saskatchewan and around the world on the president’s tour. WE MAKE OUR STUDENTS OUR PRIORITY. As our student population continues to diversify, we are committed to creating the services and supports they need to be successful. We have recently added over 1,000 student residence beds so more students can live on campus. We are also in the process of building the Gordon Oakes-Red Bear Student Centre, an inclusive space for gathering and learning. WE ARE ALL HUSKIES. Our Huskies Athletics program celebrated its centennial in 2011 and our teams are still going strong. Our student athletes excel both on and off the field, and they help us show people across the country what U of S determination really looks like. WE ARE FOCUSED ON THE FUTURE. Our widely admired integrated planning process and clear priorities for the future will help guide the U of S to our goal of becoming one of the most distinguished universities in Canada and the world. WE ARE CREATING A HEALTHIER TOMORROW. Our campus is home to a full range of health-science colleges and schools: dentistry, kinesiology, medicine, nursing, pharmacy and nutrition, physical therapy, public health and the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. The new Health Sciences Building provides the space our health-science researchers and students need to work together across disciplines, and supports the education of the next generation of health-care professionals. 7 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR OUR PLAN The University of Saskatchewan has an integrated planning process that many have emulated. By looking ahead in multiple-year cycles, we can focus our energy and resources on areas of importance to the university and chart our course for the future. Together, our community shapes our path through the integrated plan. We are currently in the midst of our third integrated plan, aptly titled Promise and Potential, which you can learn more about at usask.ca/plan. It outlines four areas of focus for the years 2012 – 2017: KNOWLEDGE CREATION ABORIGINAL ENGAGEMENT CULTURE AND COMMUNITY INNOVATION IN ACADEMIC PROGRAMS AND SERVICES 8 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR OUR BUDGET The U of S is a $1-billion organization. The majority of our funding comes from the provincial government, although we also have revenue from donors, other levels of government and funding agencies, tuition and other sources. In 2012-13, we successfully reduced our expenses in order to avoid a potential multi-million dollar annual deficit by 2016. The projected deficit for 2014-15 is relatively small, though finding ways to use our resources in a more effective and sustainable way continues to be a priority. 501 Government of SK Total: $1,019 M Other Tuition and fees 25 Gifts 29 Investments 128 Other government Sales/other 99 83 Government of Canada 69 85 2014 REVENUE BY SOURCE $ IN MILLIONS For more information on the finances of the university, see our latest annual report at usask.ca/reporting/annual_reports. 9 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR OUR COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS We are home to 13 colleges and three schools that focus on graduate students. Many of our colleges have now celebrated their centennials, and they continue to evolve to best prepare our students for the ever-changing landscape when they complete their education. Our students choose from nearly 200 undergraduate degree options and over 120 graduate degree options to find the best fit for them. BOARD OF GOVERNORS Made up of 11 members, the board is responsible for overseeing and directing all matters related to the management, administration and control of the university’s property, revenues and financial affairs. Its members include two members elected by the senate, five members appointed by the government, one student and one faculty member, and the chancellor and president as ex officio members. This group meets at least six times a year. UNIVERSITY COUNCIL Council is responsible for overseeing and directing the university’s academic affairs. Chaired by an elected faculty member, the 116 members of council include the president, provost and vice-president academic, two faculty members from each college, each affiliated and federated college and the library, one student representing each college and each affiliated and federated college, and 54 faculty members at large. UNIVERSITY SENATE Some of the responsibilities of the senate include making recommendations regarding the establishment or disestablishment of any college, school or department, the granting of honorary degrees and non-academic student discipline. Members include representatives of the university, the Ministry of Advanced Education, representatives from federated and affiliated colleges, elected members from districts in the province and members at large, students, and representatives of key professional societies, groups and organizations. 11 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR OUR SIGNATURE AREAS Although we offer a wide breadth of programming, and our researchers work across a range of disciplines, we also have areas of special importance to our institution. They include: ABORIGINAL PEOPLES: ENGAGEMENT AND SCHOLARSHIP By 2050, half of Saskatchewan’s population may be of Aboriginal ancestry, a demographic shift that creates challenge and opportunity. Our shared journey will help advance Indigenous and non-Indigenous ways of knowing and prepare a new generation of Aboriginal youth for the global knowledge economy. AGRICULTURE: FOOD AND BIOPRODUCTS FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Projections show that food production must double by 2050 to feed the world’s growing population. We are working to strengthen Saskatchewan’s agricultural leadership with new science, technology and policies to help feed a hungry world adequately, safely and sustainably. ENERGY AND MINERAL RESOURCES: TECHNOLOGY AND PUBLIC POLICY FOR A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT Demand for energy and natural resources is starting to outpace supply. Clean energy solutions, sustainable resource development and sound policy development are vital to meet future demand while conserving ecosystems and sharing the benefits with all. ONE HEALTH: SOLUTIONS AT THE ANIMAL-HUMANENVIRONMENT INTERFACE Health for all species is inextricably linked to challenges such as emerging diseases, water and food safety, and environmental degradation. We are working to develop scientific, public health and policy approaches that integrate human, animal and ecosystem health. SYNCHROTRON SCIENCES: INNOVATION IN HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT AND ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES With Canada’s only synchrotron and the largest number of synchrotron users of any university in Canada, we are harnessing powerful imaging and analytical techniques to solve challenges in health, environment, materials science and other areas of global social and economic importance. WATER SECURITY: STEWARDSHIP OF THE WORLD’S FRESHWATER RESOURCES Climate change, pollution and overuse are putting severe strain on the quality and quantity of fresh water for drinking, sanitation and food production. We are developing new interdisciplinary science, technology and policy to address these urgent issues. 12 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR OUR ONGOING PROGRESS Although we have come a long way since 1907, we are not ones to rest on our laurels. Some of our recent accomplishments speak to our drive to always move forward, building on our past success. The Health Sciences Building was the largest capital project in our university’s history, and is nearly complete. By renovating the existing structure as well as building onto it, we have created a space where health-science faculty and students can work together across disciplines, better reflecting real-life practice. Between 2011 and 2013, we welcomed over 1,000 more students to live on campus thanks to two new residence developments: the College Quarter residences and Graduate House. Even with existing facilities, we always look for ways to enhance the work being done. In 2013, we commissioned the International Vaccine Centre, now part of VIDO-InterVac, making it one of the most advanced containment level 3 facilities in the world. In 2014, the Sylvia Fedoruk Canadian Centre for Nuclear Innovation completed construction on the cyclotron, which will produce isotopes needed for medical research and treatment. The Gordon Oakes-Red Bear Student Centre, a place meant for gathering and for student support, is scheduled to open in 2015. 13 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR OUR SENIOR ADMINISTRATION GROUP GORDON BARNHART President and Vice-Chancellor (interim) GREG FOWLER Vice-President Finance and Resources ERNIE BARBER Provost and Vice-President Academic (interim) HEATHER MAGOTIAUX Vice-President Advancement and Community Engagement 14 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR KAREN CHAD Vice-President Research SENIOR ADMINISTRATION Jim Basinger Associate Vice-President Research Cheryl Carver Associate Vice-President Human Resources (interim) Jeff Dumba Associate Vice-President Financial Services Division Jim Germida Vice-Provost, Faculty Relations Beth Horsburgh Associate Vice-President Research – Health Patricia McDougall Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning Ivan Muzychka Associate Vice-President Communications John Rigby Associate Provost Institutional Planning and Assessment Mark Roman CIO and Associate Vice-President Information and Communications Technology Colin Tennent Associate Vice-President Facilities Management Division Elizabeth Williamson University Secretary DEANS AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS Beth Bilson Law (interim) Carol Rodgers Kinesiology Michael Atkinson Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy Preston Smith Medicine Adam Baxter-Jones Graduate Studies and Research (interim) Mary Buhr Agriculture and Bioresources Lorna Butler Nursing Douglas Freeman Western College of Veterinary Medicine Georges Kipouros Engineering Nazeem Muhajarine School of Public Health (interim) Toddi Steelman School of Environment and Sustainability Peter Stoicheff Arts and Science Daphne Taras Edwards School of Business Gerry Uswak Dentistry Kishor Wasan Pharmacy and Nutrition Vicki Williamson University Library Michelle Prytula Education 15 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR OUR HOME We are proud to call Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada home. Saskatoon is the biggest city in Saskatchewan, with a population of about 250,000. The University of Saskatchewan sits in the centre of the city on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River. Saskatoon is well known for many things—its beautiful riverbank and skylines, the many bridges that join the city across the water, its warm and sunny summers and its less than warm winters. Luckily, the sun still shines even on the coldest days. In fact, Saskatoon is one of the sunniest cities in Canada. There are year-round festivals, activities and celebrations to take part in, and a blossoming foodie and local shopping scene that has people talking. The city, and the province, has seen significant growth in recent years. Though it is getting bigger, it still retains its sense of community. It is a university town, and the university is an important part of what makes Saskatoon so special. Although our main campus is located in Saskatoon, we are truly the province’s university. Programs and partnerships with other colleges and schools make it easy for students to complete a U of S degree while staying at home in their communities around the province. 16 UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN / APPOINTMENT OF PRESIDENT AND VICE-CHANCELLOR OUR NEXT PRESIDENT University of Saskatchewan Appointment of the President and Vice-Chancellor Position Description – December 2014 THE POSITION Under the University of Saskatchewan Act, the president and vice-chancellor (“the president”) is responsible for supervising and directing the academic work and business affairs of the university, its faculty members and student body, officers and employees, and for exercising additional powers and duties that are conferred on or assigned to the president by the Board of Governors.
