Toxicology Centre Photo Contest 2015 "Shown is MSc student Lawrence D'Silva posing with a sediment core collected from Buffalo Pound Lake, Saskatchewan, Canada during early springtime. The reservoir provides drinking water to the major cities of Regina and Moose Jaw, yet is prone to summer algal blooms, which create drinking water treatment issues. Lawrence's research aims to understand the natural environmental mechanisms within the reservoir that are primarily responsible for increased nutrient loads, which stimulate the algal blooms. He expects his research to prevent further algal bloom development through better reservoir management, thereby leading to cleaner drinking water". Larry D’Silva Sara Hanson electro-fishing for Fathead Minnows in Wascana Creek, SK, downstream of the City of Regina's wastewater treatment plant to assess potential endocrine disrupting effects of the effluents on Fathead Minnow populations. Sara Hanson I am studying how stopover site contamination affects pre-migratory fuelling in shorebirds. To do this, I am trapping Sanderling (Calidris alba) at Chaplin Lake, Saskatchewan, a relatively uncontaminated stopover site, and at Corpus Christi, Texas, a stopover site contaminated by urban and industrial pollution, and I am comparing the body condition and fuelling status of Sanderling at each location. This picture shows a Sanderling that we trapped along the beach in Corpus Christi. The green flag and metal band on the birds’ legs allow us, and anyone who spots the bird after it is released, to identify it. Kristin Bianchini Thank you
