Participate: take notes, work with peers, practice assigned problems, and ask questions. Be respectful of your classmates, teachers, and the materials used in class. Take responsibility for your actions and the effort you put into this class. Do your own work. If you choose to cheat, you and your counterpart will earn a zero for that assignment, test, or quiz. In addition, you may receive a call home, detention, and/or referral. Cell phones are to be used only when authorized and appropriate. They are NOT to serve as calculators, as those will be provided during class. Ask questions and seek help! If you have a question, chances are someone else has the same one so ask! Verbal warning Conference with teacher Phone call or e-mail home Detention Referral to office Severity Clause: In severe circumstances where the disruptive behavior is dangerous to others, verbally abusive, or extremely disruptive to the learning environment, etc., the lower levels of consequences will not apply and the student will be sent directly to the principal without warning. Class Goals: To develop a good understanding of algebra concepts relevant and applicable to everyday situations To develop your ability to think in an abstract manner To develop an orderly method of problem-solving To develop the ability to work with classmates. To practice self-directed learning To value doing quality work To read and understand math text To prepare for standardized testing, such as the SAT Materials: Algebra 2 Book (Holt) Pencils Correcting Pens 3-Ring Binder Lined paper or printer paper Graphing paper Calculator Even though we will be doing a lot of math by hand and in our heads, it is highly recommended that you own at least a scientific calculator, but preferably a graphing calculator (the school uses TI-84). The graphing calculator is a little more expensive, but it would be a good investment, as you’ll likely need one in college. Policies: AttendanceAttendance is very important! If you are absent it is your responsibility to: 1) Turn in any work that was due the day you were absent (and please write “Absent” on the top) 2) Go to the website or ask a friend to find out what you missed and take any worksheets you need 3) Get the notes from another classmate or website All assignments are listed on the posted calendar and available on my class webpage. If you are absent, please visit the webpage to find PDF or Word documents of homework and the notes. If you know you will be absent ahead of time, please let me know, and I will try to give you any available materials ahead of time. For further concerns regarding attendance expectations, please see the school handbook. Hall PassesHall passes will be given to students at appropriate times throughout the hour. Hall passes will not be given in the middle of a lesson unless there is an emergency. HomeworkHomework is very rarely graded for accuracy, but it is my expectation that it is attempted daily. The purpose of homework is to practice working through new concepts without penalty for incorrect procedures and answers. Homework is a springboard for questions the next day. It is important that you take this seriously by truly trying to do all the problems, checking your answers, and most importantly ASK QUESTIONS about the problems. Homework will be assigned daily will be graded for completion. You must: ATTEMPT all problems Show all work and follow directions Use PENCIL! Self-correct your homework with a colored marking pen Make your work legible and organized Quiz RetakesALL homework must be COMPLETED in order to do a retake on a quiz. After completing the quiz corrections sheet, you must attach the quiz and all homework leading up to that quiz. Quiz retakes MUST be completed BEFORE the chapter test. The average score between the original quiz and second quiz will be the final grade received. Assessments: Expect to receive concept quizzes each week. These will be short quizzes that cover only about three to four sections. Tests will be over large units of material and are consistent throughout the school. All quizzes and tests will be announced ahead of time, but are always subject to change. Grades: Summative Assessments (Tests): 50% Formative Assessments (Quizzes, Homework, Classwork, etc): 30% Semester Exam: 20% At Hartland High School we are bringing more consistency and accuracy to the academic marks that we provide for students. This year, teachers are engaging in a simple and easy to understand grading and reporting scale (the 4-point scale), which is consistent with GPA scales and what colleges use. How it Works: In class, students will be graded on the following scale: 4.0 – A 3.7 – A3.3 – B+ 3.0 – B 2.7 – B2.3 – C+ 2.0 – C 1.7 – C1.3 – D+ 1.0 – D 0.7 – D0.3 – E 0.0 – No Attempt In MiSTAR, you will notice that all grades in the gradebook are represented by a number as shown above. These numbers represent the grade that the student received on the assignment. If a student received a B+ on a paper, the gradebook will show a 3.3 for the mark. Class Help Options: I am available for help most days before school and some after school. Due to staff meetings, my current after school availability will primarily be Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:303:30. Please seek help if you need it! And remember, I am always available via e-mail. Good luck, and let’s make this a great year! Please cut and return the bottom to me by Friday, September 11th. I have read and understand the expectations for myself/my student according to the syllabus.
