Benchmark: MS 5.2 Compare forms of marine symbiosis I can compare the different forms of marine symbiosis. Students will write a short story about a symbiotic relationship. Approximately 45 minutes (Consider the writing of the short story (1-2 paragraphs as the outside activity). Materials – Outcome: Time Recommended: Materials needed: -Product explanation sheet -Paper/pencil/ruler/scissors, pictures, etc. for contents of diorama Skills – critical thinking, organizing, time management, oral and written communication Equipment (beside computer) – Vocabulary: Dependence Hawaiian vocabulary Interdependence - kūkauka'i and pronunciations: Organism - meaola Species - lāhui Symbiosis - none Options: 1. To extend and/or assess students’ understanding of the concept of interdependence, you could ask students to classify the symbiotic relationship between different Hawaiian marine species - using a Venn Diagram or Double Bubble map. Grouping configuration 2. Students could create skits around their stories. Pair students based on host/symbiote in one of the symbiotic relationships and them perform for the class.
