Introduction
Founded in 1991, the Centre for Languages &
International Education (CLIE) offers language
courses taught to the highest standard by
qualified and experienced native speakers
who are also able to advise participants on
language learning objectives.
The Programme
The Evening Courses Programme is designed
to teach participants how to communicate
effectively in a foreign language. Whether for
professional or personal reasons, an Evening
Course can provide the means to achieve
fluency in a chosen language. All four skills are
taught: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Courses cover the language as it is spoken in
everyday situations, from basic survival skills at
beginner levels through to fluent communication
at advanced levels.
The communicative teaching methods and
the group size of a maximum of 14 students
encourage participants to make rapid progress
through active class participation.
The Evening Courses Programme is open to
everyone and our classes attract students,
academics and professionals. This creates a
varied and dynamic learning environment.

Great support
I enjoyed the course and have
progressed in my understanding.
The course was structured in a
useful way, the teacher was very
friendly and the environment
very supportive.
Participants are encouraged to develop their
language skills by using our Self-Access
Centre for self-study. Facilities include books,
films, documentaries, course videos and audio
recordings in a wide variety of languages.

prepared the classes really well
My teacher was brilliant,
and managed to get everyone
involved and participating.
• participants funded by their employers
should email clie-eveningcourses@ucl.ac.uk
with a sponsorship document on enrolment.
This should be a letter from an authorised
finance officer on the organisation’s headed
paper, stating the participant’s name, the
language applied for, and the amount of
sponsorship. An invoice will then be sent to
the employer for payment.
• Course confirmation will be posted to
participant’s home address once all
